Two months of breastfeeding Maeve. 🤱🏼

Two months of exclusively breastfeeding our girl — and two months of realizing just how different two breastfeeding journeys can be.

This time around, I’ve hand-pumped only a few times, she took her first bottle this week while my husband and I had our first evening away, and I have felt so, SO much more confident feeding in public.

But confidence doesn’t mean it’s always easy.

The loooong newborn feeds and cluster feeding were still so mentally and physically exhausting, even knowing exactly what to expect going into it.

And just like her big sister, Maeve has CMPA, so I’ve had to eliminate dairy from my diet. Thankfully, that’s all we’ve needed to eliminate so far (which was not the case for Nora — IYKYK) — but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t hard.

And I think this is something worth saying:

👉🏼I can be incredibly proud of breastfeeding Maeve AND find eliminating dairy really difficult. Both can be true.
👉🏼 I can be grateful that breastfeeding is going well AND still feel exhausted.
👉🏼I can feel confident AND still need support.
👉🏼And I can celebrate this journey without forgetting how hard my first one was.

With Nora, breastfeeding looked completely different. Triple feeding. Pumping. Supplements. Countless appointments. Extensive elimination diets. Four months before we were exclusively feeding at the breast, followed by an abrupt ending at six months when her bloody stools continued despite exhausting every effort we could.

So these two months with Maeve feel special.

Not because this journey is “better.” Not because breastfeeding has to look like this to be successful. But because I know how hard breastfeeding can be — and I know how much can happen behind the scenes that nobody sees.

Two months down. 💕
And I am so grateful for this girl & however long this breastfeeding journey gets to be. by @flo.lactation

🤍 Meet Maeve 🤍

On July 30th at 4:30am, at 41 weeks, we welcomed our second little girl, Maeve, earthside, weighing 8 lbs 12 oz.

After a very different birth experience with our first daughter, this birth felt deeply healing for me — a little piece of redemption I didn’t know I needed. I was fortunate enough to have the birth I had hoped for, and I’ll always hold so much gratitude for that.

I had a successful (and spontaneous) VBAC, supported by my incredible midwives @norfolk_roots_midwives, my amazing coworkers @norfolkgeneralhospital, and, of course, my husband, who was by my side through every moment.

I chose to labour and birth in the hospital, on continuous monitoring, and without an epidural. These were deeply personal choices that felt right for me and for the birth I hoped to have. I know every birth looks different — sometimes by choice, sometimes by circumstance, and sometimes simply because birth has a way of writing its own story. For me, this birth was something special. It was empowering, healing, and beautiful in ways I’ll carry with me forever.

And now, as a mom of two daughters, I’m soaking up these newborn days while getting to experience this chapter of motherhood all over again — with Maeve by my side.

Welcome to the world, sweet girl. We’re so lucky you’re ours. 🤍 by @flo.lactation

Did you know that prenatal breastfeeding prep can go way beyond just “what to expect”?

When my prenatal clients leave our session, they don’t just have information—they have tools.

Because when you’re 3 days postpartum, tired and overwhelmed… you shouldn’t have to go searching for answers. taken in Norfolk County, Ontario by @flo.lactation

🌿 Breastfeeding & Mental Health — The Side We Don’t Talk About Enough

Breastfeeding is often called “natural,” but that doesn’t mean it’s simple. Feeding your baby intersects with your mental health in real, meaningful ways — and your experience deserves to be acknowledged.

✨ Breastfeeding & PPD:
Breastfeeding challenges can increase the risk of postpartum depression, especially when someone wants to breastfeed but struggles, or feels pressured to continue despite pain or mental health concerns. This isn’t a reflection of your effort or love — the relationship is complex.

✨ The Emotional Wave When Milk Comes In:
When milk shifts from colostrum to transitional milk (days 2–5), many parents feel a sudden emotional surge — tears, overwhelm, irritability, or anxiety. Hormonal changes + exhaustion make this common and temporary. My midwife told me to put on The Notebook and embrace the tears.

✨ D-MER:
Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex causes a sudden wave of sadness or anxiety at letdown. It’s physiological — not psychological — and not a sign of disconnection from your baby.

✨ Food Intolerances & Maternal Mental Health:
Elimination diets for baby’s intolerances can be overwhelming. Restricting multiple foods increases stress and the mental load. Your mental load matters just as much as your baby's symptoms.

✨ Other Factors:
Birth trauma, sleep deprivation, NICU stays, a history of anxiety/depression, chronic pain, returning to work, and societal pressure to “succeed” at breastfeeding — none of these are small things, and all impact your feeding journey.

🌿 Read this twice:
Your ability or inability to breastfeed does not define your worth as a mother.
You deserve support, not pressure.
You deserve compassion, not comparison.
Your bond with your baby is not measured in ounces.

Every feeding journey is different — what matters most is what works for you and your baby.

Did I miss anything?

Watch baby’s early cues, not late ones. 🤱🏽
Those tiny movements—wiggling, stirring, rooting—are your baby’s way of saying “I’m ready to feed.”
Responding early usually means:
🤍 a calmer baby
🤍 an easier latch
🤍 a more relaxed feeding session
When we wait until baby is crying, they’re already overwhelmed… and feeding becomes much harder for both of you.
Learning your baby’s cues is a skill—one that gets easier with practice.

Today, I want to take a moment for you—the one doing the feeds, the cuddles, the appointments, the late nights, the Googling, the deep breaths.
Your body is working hard. Your mind is working hard. And sometimes, it’s okay to slow down and reconnect.
A warm drink. A deep breath. A snack that isn’t eaten standing. A few minutes with your shoulders relaxed.
Small moments of care for you support your feeding journey just as much as latch techniques do.
💛 You’re worth taking care of too. taken in Norfolk County, Ontario by @flo.lactation
