QOTD: What do you WISH counted as a tax write-off?

Raises hand... Student loan payments (principal AND interest) and no cap on interest paid. Apparently, my education is priceless... except when it comes to taxes. 🎓💸

According to the IRS, you should be making estimated tax payments if you check these boxes:

☑️ Self-employed individual (including partners and S-corp shareholders)

☑️ Expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more

However, you don’t have to make estimated tax payments if you check ALL of these boxes:

☑️ You had no tax liability for the prior year

☑️ You were a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the whole year

☑️ Your prior tax year covered a 12-month period

Consult with your tax accountant to determine whether you need to pay estimated taxes and how much you could owe.

Please note that corporations generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe tax of $500 or more when their return is filed.

🧾 Drowing in receipts?

Here's how to make the shift from an unorganized shoebox (or in my case, a manila holder😅), to an organized, digital database of receipts!

📧 Set up an automatic email rule to forward any receipts to a Receipts folder within your inbox!

☁️ From your Receipt folder, save your emails and any attachments to cloud-based storage, like Google Drive, to be able to easily share receipts with your accountant.

📲 For physical receipts, use a scanner app on your phone (or even snap a photo!), then upload this to your cloud-based storage Receipts folder.

With this data in hand, you can ramp up marketing efforts before (or during) these months to help boost sales even more. 📈

During slower months, you can cut back on discretionary spending and focus on improving your systems!

It can't be TOO high, it can't be TOO low, you want your profit margin to be juuust right for you, for your business, and compared to industry standard! 📊

🍎 You can't compare apples to oranges when it comes to your profit margin. A manufacturing company and a marketing agency are so different in nature, they're not a fair comparison.

Certain businesses may naturally lend themselves to higher profit margins! However, you want to make sure that these high margins aren't coming at the cost of future growth. 📈

If you're making money on the side, you're going to want to read this post! 👇

The IRS cares A LOT about the distinction between running a hobby and running a business.

Why? ⁉️

You're allowed to write off ordinary and necessary business expenses, but you can't deduct expenses related to your hobby. 💸

If you're receiving income from a hobby, you've still got to report that on your tax return!
