so… what exactly *is* flop?

what is flop?

in many ways, art and nightlife share the same dream- to move people to a space just outside reality that gives them enough freedom to imagine other ways to be. unfortunately, the two worlds rarely meet. flop hopes to change that by combining two worlds into one.

built in the image of the 2000s chill out room and the 2010s montreal afters, flop invites guests to join a world of sweetness, chill, and imagination that is often missing from larger, louder nightlife events. sometimes the djs we program are famous and sometimes they aren’t. one sunday you may hear an improvised flute performance; the next, an hour-long breathwork cool-down. what’s consistent about flop is the world it invites you to inhabit, a world where you feel cared for, relaxed, and free.

flop is sculpted by a community of montreal artists, each invited to contribute something that reflects their own practice, from food and wine to performance and world-building. every detail is considered, and every edition becomes a collective work.

every edition of flop is an experiment. some ideas succeed, others surprise us, and every gathering teaches us something about what a party can be. It won’t be for everyone—but if it resonates with you, welcome in.

we hope you’ll join us for our next edition sunday, july 19 from 4pm - 11pm @breakglassstudios

stay tuned for more info about our artists in the coming week <3

**artist announcement: aquatic harmony**

notes from the programmer:
aquatic harmony is what i’d call one of montreal’s dj’s djs. i think one of my favorite things about them is the way i’ve seen them listening on any dancefloor we’ve shared. regardless of who’s playing, they’ve always got an insightful thought to share about this track or that producer or some record label from 20 years ago that i really, really wish i could also remember off the top of my head. a gifted producer as well as dj, their set will be sure to contain a musical range as wide as their knowledge is deep. it will be a special one for the heads and the hearts alike for sure.

artist bio:
aquatic harmony is an american-born dj & producer based in montréal and founder of the label axisblue. raised in the midwest, his musical roots converge between the birthplace of house/techno, diy rock & punk, and fringe experimentation.

what will you play at flop?
a dj set that will feature psychedelic minimal bass sounds, trippy glitches, drones, as well as forthcoming axisblue productions and dance edits for the late night hours

a mix of yours or someone else's that feels right:
chuki at dripping 2024

your favorite memory of an afters/watching the sun come up at a party/partying into the next day?
oo many to name. most recent being: ‘get perlonized’ berlin summer 2025 with one of my best friends amongst the blissed out adorable & stylish zombies, sunshine seeping through the skylight, swinging to the minimal funky tech

catch aquatic harmony at 4:45am on sunday!

**artist announcement: matas**

notes from the programmer:
i’ve always said that what nightlife requires most is those who live for the culture, because so many people take and benefit from it without putting anything back in. matas is a dj who gives a hell of a lot, and invigorates any room or scene he’s in with pure love for the magic of the music + people + dancefloor equation. in my opinion, his sound - dance forward, sexy, fun, heady, cheeky, accessible - is a perfect fit for montreal, where digging and debauchery matter in equal measure and your birthday really can be a lifestyle. i can’t wait to catch a vibe at his extended set on sunday <3

what will you play at flop?
being a long-form closing set, i'll start slow, meeting the previous dj around a downtempo pace, and slowly build from there to see where we go. i like to keep my options pretty open depending on what people are feeling. djing for me is all about reading into what people are feeling and fusing that with what i'm trying to do, a bit of collaboration. i've been playing much more frequently outside of new york, which has been a nice experience, but also overwhelming, since i can't as confidently read a crowd outside my home city.

what’s a mix of yours or someone else's that feels *right*/:
i'm really happy with my last recording on my soundcloud, from the sustain-release nonstop at nowadays, a club that means so much to me, and where i share a residency. anytime i play, i'm trying to show the conversation happening within myself, and it becomes quite dualistic, playfulness countered by weighted, serious tracks. i like to push myself back and forth, and bring the crowd with me.

another set that isn't my own is ogazon's houghton recording from last year. i first listened to it with my best friends watching the sunset at far rockaway in new york. a beautiful way to start the summer.

your favorite memory of an afters / watching the sun come up at a party / partying into the next day:
i couldn't tell you, i've never done that before ;)

**catch matas on sunday from 9am - 2pm**

notes from the programmer:
a tireless capricorn and montreal institution, james benjamin gives a whole lot to our scene, and it shows. whether he’s mixing in the studio with a visiting artist or jamming behind the booth, james’s sonic aptitude is endless, and his love for music is impossible not to catch.

artist bio:
james benjamin is a montreal-based producer, dj, musician grammy-winning engineer, and co-owner of breakglass studios. his live work moves between electronic production, improvisation and an ever-evolving collection of machines and instruments.

what will you play at flop?
i’ll be playing a live sunrise set of original improvised sounds and music. for this special flop set I’ve expanded my modular rig with theremin and guitar, combining and interacting with a set of custom effects and loop pedals alongside the modular itself.

a mix of yours or someone else's that feels right:
SOUNDSCAPE SAMPLE BB04 sept 27 2025 on soundcloud
this is a soundscape I originally made for an installation at below breakglass, and later presented again in new york as part of a pop-up sauna party. It feels connected to the more ambient, spatial and improvised side of what I’ll be doing at sunrise.

your favorite memory of an afters/watching the sun come up at a party/partying into the next day:
a lot of after-hours moments sort of blend together, and a great many of mine have happened within the walls of breakglass. the best time of the “night” is usually once the night is over and the sun begins to rise. the dance floor has thinned out, and the people who are still there are really present for the music and the moment.

catch james in our ambient room at 4:45am

*artist announcement:* BONNE-V

notes from the programmer
if you have eyes and live in montreal, then you’ve probably know BONNE-V. one of the city’s most gifted and prodigious photographers, he uses his lens to make the ordinary extraordinary (and shoot all of Flop’s posters). the same taste and timing that make BONNE-V a phenomenal photographer also make him a gifted DJ, weaving together sexy, diverse selections that slink from bass to pop to breaks and back again. we can’t wait to see what he does with the deep morning post sunrise haze, but we know it will be something seductive, special, and sweet.

artist bio:
BONNE-V is the moniker of dj and photographer felix bonnevie. led by the same sensibilities across both mediums, his sets offer spaced out, hypnotic selections that invite dancefloors into a dreamlike world.

what will you play at flop?:
an ethereal and euphoric selection of ambient, downtempo and pop music to guide dancers from night to day.

a mix of yours or someone else's that feels right
priori’s 75F mix for pi pi pi

your favorite memory of an afters/watching the sun come up at a party/partying into the next day:
In zipolite after photographing somos festival overnight, stumbling around in the sand with film cameras and light stands, i stop by a neighboring stage where swimmie is playing spin spin sugar, then turn back to see the sun rising over the ocean.

catch felix from 7am - 9am on sunday morning :p

**artist announcement: nabelu**

notes from the programmer:
more than a gifted musician, nabelu is one of the most singular presences in montreal’s dance community. their dancefloor energy is infectious, their seamless steps quite singular, and their musical talents and flare for adventure seem to know no bounds. gracing us with a rare live set, we expect this performance to be just as special and inspiring as the soul giving it.

artist bio:
nabelu is a producer and multi-instrumentalist who's love of montreal's musical and experimentation and bass soaked dance floors keeps her in the city far from the sea.

what will you play at flop?
i'll be sharing a live set that takes sounds collected through trespassing to record frogs, waking up at 4am to catch a storm, chasing elusive birds, sitting by crashing waves, infatuations, doubts and studies in jazz and electroacoustics and weaves them into something like trip hop.

a mix of yours or someone else's that feels right:
I have yet to DJ, but K Wata's recent set for resident advisor is the most inspiring set I've heard this summer.

your favorite memory of an afters/watching the sun come up at a party/partying into the next day:
it was near the end of an 8 day festival, something about being collectively so deep in the parallel universe of the dance magnified the effect of sunrise revealing the final dancers to each other. the entire dance floor turned into people pin balling around dancing together in pairs and forming little groups that split up and joined others and every face I looked into was beaming and beautiful.

be sure catch nabelu early suday morning <3
