SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change is published in conjunction with the sixth Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB 2025) under the artistic direction of Florencia Rodriguez. In a world defined by crisis and uncertainty, where architects are researching, relearning, and reimagining, the volume marks not only a change in direction but also presents provocative inquiries about a redefinition in the substance and fundamentals of the field. It is an invitation to think with others, to project with intention, and to set new grounds for the interpretation and design of our built environments. In the same spirit, the book unfolds the many faces of SHIFT through collective, multilayered, and multidimensional conversations, visual essays, and manifestos.

CAB 2025 participants’ voices are brought to print through a transcript of a five-hour conversation marathon that tackled topics such as new realism, the magic in the ordinary, pleasures in the urban, and the need to critically shift architecture’s language, as well as a repository of manifestos exploring other possible worlds. Beyond the exhibition, SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change also calls upon practitioners from different fields to discuss the current state of education in architecture schools, the challenges of material culture, the future of housing, and exhibitions as devices for change.

While getting ready for the @chicagoarchitecturebiennial, it’s great to go back and review one highlight of this year.
It was such a pleasure to collaborate with @johnstonmarklee and @christopherhawthorne for the Speaker’s Corner at the @labiennale!
Gathering, talking, throwing ideas out there to make them part of a bigger collective conversation has always been crucial to my practice, and this collaboration celebrates that spirit.

La cocina integrada de tu departamento y el balcón ancho donde hoy te sentás son parte de la mutación estructural de la vivienda.

Como bien marca @flor_ness en este fragmento del tercer episodio de la miniserie documental que produjimos en @labsostenibles, nuestra forma de habitar cambió. El balcón dejó de ser una franja lineal para simular naturaleza y se convirtió en una extensión real para estar. Disolvimos la frontera entre el adentro y el afuera porque el programa de vida urbana contemporáneo ya no encaja en las viejas plantas compartimentadas.

Pensar el desarrollo urbano ya no solo se trata de analizar grandes infraestructuras; sino que se trata de entender las lógicas normativas y de mercado que moldean nuestros espacios más íntimos.

Este sábado cerramos el ciclo de "Buenos Aires: La ciudad continua" debatiendo exactamente esto. En el marco de @openhousebsas, proyectamos el último episodio en continuado y a las 18:00 h nos sentamos a analizar el futuro de nuestra región metropolitana.

Si te interesa entender las reglas de juego detrás de la ciudad que habitás, acercate.

This is the SHIFT Marathon: a five-hour performance centered on conversation and the collective production of meaning. It was conceived to generate a complex editorial piece that became part of SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, the book I edited together with Isabella Moretti, Santiago Bogani, and Igo Kommers Wender.

The book will be launched next Saturday, August 29, at 3 pm at the Graham Foundation, whose support made this effort possible. Published by Park Books and the Chicago Architecture Biennial.

I will always be grateful for the space I was given as Artistic Director of the 6th edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial—to experiment, challenge ideas, and bring together a plurality of relevant, provocative, and distinct voices.

Esta es la SHIFT Marathon: una performance de cinco horas centrada en la conversación y la producción colectiva de sentido. Fue concebida para generar una pieza editorial compleja que pasó a formar parte de SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, el libro que edité junto a Isabella Moretti, Santiago Bogani e Igo Kommers Wender.

El libro se presentará el próximo sábado 29 de agosto a las 3 pm en la Graham Foundation, cuyo apoyo hizo posible este esfuerzo. Publicado por Park Books y la Chicago Architecture Biennial.

Siempre voy a estar agradecida por el espacio que tuve como Directora Artística de la 6ª edición de la Chicago Architecture Biennial para experimentar, desafiar ideas y reunir una pluralidad de voces relevantes, provocadoras y diferentes.

Kyle Miller @kylejamesmiller and I are happy to launch the first issue of TABLE, a new 10-issue journal where we invite architects to share critical insights into contemporary architectural practice and education. The first issue, titled “discipline”, includes 8 contributions from leading voices in academia and practice. They each write about a building or text which they believe demonstrates fundamental techniques or ideas in our discipline that are still alive or evolving.

Join us for the launch at @prattinstitute on August 26, 2026. 6:15-8pm in Higgins Hall, where we will be joined by the authors for a discussion. Two weeks after the close of SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change, we’re still reflecting with gratitude on what we built together.

The sixth edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial transformed spaces across Chicago into platforms for bold ideas, urgent questions, and new perspectives on architecture’s role in a rapidly changing world.

Thank you to the architects, artists, and designers, our partners across the city, and the funders and supporters who made it possible—and to everyone who visited and engaged.

SHIFT sparked conversations that will continue beyond the exhibition, with several installations already being rehomed and materials thoughtfully reused.

This moment marks not an ending—but an expansion. Stay tuned for what’s next. by @flor_ness
