Thank you @monadnyc for allowing me to showcase my art at the “Community Days” BHM Exhibition. This event brought together over 100 artists to share their work, experiences, and perspectives on Black life, joy, and community in celebration of Black History Month. It was powerful to be surrounded by so many creatives, each telling their own story while contributing to something collective. My concept behind this project was to highlight an aspect of Black culture and explore how it connects to joy. Sneakers are a cultural language — they represent self-expression, identity, and memory. They’re a shared vocabulary tied to style, community, and history in ways that feel deeply personal for many of us. I decided to build my concept around sneakers because of its double meaning for me; It's something that's simultaneously personal while also widely understood within culture. Image 1 is about grounding a familiar moment in time. Everyone knows that feeling around a brand new pair of sneakers — cleaning them for the first time, taking a second to admire them, or feeling that quiet confidence when you finally get your favorite pair. Maybe it’s something you saved up for. Maybe it was a gift from someone you love. Maybe you’re on your way out and pause for a second to care for them. I wanted to honor that ritual — those small, everyday moments that carry meaning within sneaker culture for Black communities. Image 2 is wayy more emotional and expressive. It’s rooted in movement, energy, and presence. I wanted to capture how style and identity live in the body- the way we hold ourselves, & how we interact with the things we love. For me, this image reflects how joy isn’t always still; sometimes it shows up in motion, in creativity, in the freedom to take up space. Together, both images represent joy to me. They celebrate Black culture and sneaker culture while honoring our sense of style, creativity, and influence. There's so much more I can say about the creative process behind this- maybe I'll write something long form if enough people are interested 😎.
