“A stroke of genius in seduction: how Parsifal really keeps you awake!”

“Dutch director Floris Visser and his set designer Frank Philipp Schlößmann relocated the action of the recent Parsifal premiere to an imposing Gothic church ruin. Tourists stroll through the five-aisled structure with varying degrees of interest, and even a group of schoolchildren endures the tour of the remaining walls.

One of the boys seems so fascinated by the retelling of the Grail legend that the entire story unfolds in his imagination. This is a very vivid concept and execution, because when the audience sees Wagner’s enigmatic farewell work through the eyes of a child, a wealth of entertaining fantasy elements is not only permissible but practically essential.

It’s as dark as The Name of the Rose, and also frequently ironic: the Holy Spear used here is strikingly similar to the Holy Lance from the Middle Ages kept in the Vienna Treasury.

The nearly six-hour performance captivates the audience almost continuously, which is very rare for the meditative Parsifal.”

Gaston Theodor Wals, echtgenoot van Beppie Neervoort-Wals, is plotseling overleden op 73-jarige leeftijd in de bloei van zijn leven.
