'Watching the eclipse', oil on canvas, 14"x11" (35 x 28)
Unusually small because the shop had run out of my normal format. Will look like a jewel framed. Eclipse because most of it was painted the day after the eclipse of 12 August 2026. Sadly my view of it was limited as I did not have the special glasses. Ow well, the next time then.
I think this painting is a pretty good one - I don't think I will change anything.

Just realised I never posted this - and yet it is - in my opinion - a really good one.

But to fill in with colours, or not? 🤔
You can see the pencil drawings on the white...and now i think those look rather good, and am afraid to fill in the planned colours!
🥴 work in progress...

New!
'London bird', oil on canvas, 14"x11" (35 x 28 cm).
It's the pigeon on my terrace, really - a real pest. But 'London pigeon doesn't sound good 🤪
The advantage of super warm weather is that the oils dry in a week. Now five days after completion it's already 'touch dry' - usually it's double.

'Explosive Call', Oil on canvas, 35 x 28 cm - 14" x 11" (approx)
Very pleased with this; simple and not requiring additions. Exactly the fuchsia I wanted. Quite thick impasto.
Will explain the title another time.
Am annoyed with the tiny canvasses I am stuck with because they ran out of my usual size. It's not easy to paint details as I always use a quite big palet knife.
Will look amazing framed. The sort of painting that can take over a room.

Quick doodle this afternoon
Finally a day to myself!
It's the big ochre bird who visits my terrace every day to drink and who doesn't fly away in terror when it sees me
But is it finished? May add some black lines

"Red Hot", oil on cancas, 40 x 30 cm, 14" x 12"
My latest dabble - the hot weather makes the oil paint dry much faster 🙌
I swiped a large number of Dulux colour sample cards from the local Leyland store to help me choose colour combinations. They looked weird when I gathered sixty or so widely different colours. Last photo.
I am inordinately happy with this. Look at the difference between framed and unframed. It is not entirely finished yet; but the end product will look very much like this. I'm in the mood for red paintings - very pleased with the dark red vs watermelon pink juxtaposition.

People ask where the ideas come from - here just some random photos of things that give me colour combinations and compositions. I store them on my phone; and when I run short of inspiration, I go through them.
Vid 1: these wacky, wacky masks from Guatemala, which I bought in Key West...I had to have them.

Happy Thursday!

'Only You', oil on canvas, 40 x 30 cm, 16" x 12". Colour scheme based on Albert Irvin's, who I met in 2004. I feel more bright paintings like this coming along!

'Longer days', oil on canvas, 50x60 cm.
Pleased with this - it's funny how the better ones are often the ones painted faster. From barely a drawing, to this. To illustrate what inspires the colours, see photo 4.

'For Iran', oil on canvas, 50x40 cm. It had been a while! The happy hope-giving colours made me think of the days becoming longer...but the events determined the title.
I never know when it is finished; as one brush stroke more may ruin it!
