You feel me?

Being ready to recover might just mean being ready to not live how you’re living anymore.

You don’t have to be ready for the whole journey. Just ready to take the first step. by @flothroughit

Sometimes the most important thing you can do to help someone in recovery, is to remind them that you see them. Not their eating disorder, not their illness, or struggle but THEM.

The fact they love reading, that you saw something that made you think of them or simply that you are just there. by @flothroughit

Sometimes recovery gave me permission to have the food… while my eating disorder was still deciding which one I chose.

I could have the cookie — but I’d pick the one with fewer chocolate chips. 🍪
Ice cream — but the smallest scoop. 🍦
The slice with least amount of cheese. 🍕
The cupcake with fewer sprinkles. 🧁

I remember thinking that because I was eating the food, I was free to choose RIGHT?

Looking back, I can see how many little conditions were still there.

It’s something I now notice and explore with clients too — those subtle ways the eating disorder can stay involved in the decision, even when you’re doing something that looks like recovery.

Sometimes the next step is asking: “If the eating disorder wasn’t making this choice, what would I actually choose?”

Maybe it’s the cheesier slice. The bigger scoop. The one with more sprinkles.

And maybe being able to choose it is part of taking that choice back. 🤍 by @flothroughit

Keep watching for some very important Margot footage.

I’ve always been someone that thrive on routine and ever since leaving my full-time teaching job it’s taking awhile for me to find my footing.

So here’s a random day in my life. Going into treatment centres and speaking to people in the position I was wanting is the absolute joy of my week. There was so much hope and seeing that someone can be recovered.

DISCLAIMER: every day I have three meals and three snacks and I always will, when I was in the depth of my eating disorder seeing what people eat in a day on Instagram fuelled my comparison hard and I promised myself I would never be that person. Hence why those things aren’t included in my day because they are actually the least interesting part now.

It’s true I really do love:

asking the question behind the food rule and trust me no shame here, sharing helps deconstruct it.

noticing the wins you swept under the rug - I SAW YOU NOT MEASURE THAT!!!,

Reminding you that finding something hard doesn’t make it wrong !!!

And pastry with my coffee and a side of dog photos.

I’m an eating disorder coach, but there’s more to me than what I do. So here’s a little introduction through the things that feel most like me. 🤍

First and foremost, I’m a dog person. I’ve experienced dog therapy myself, taken dogs into schools, and seen how much comfort an animal can bring. One of the first books I read in treatment was by Shannon Kopp, so seeing the work @soulpawsrecoveryproject does now feels especially meaningful to me. I believe in the power of animals to help us heal. 🐾

I love reading, too. I’m currently training to become a CIC coach and exploring approaches like @thenourishumethod. And there will probably always be a copy of Vogue in the pile—the former fashion student in me isn’t going anywhere.

I’ve been a quote girl since the days of Facebook statuses. Sometimes someone else puts words to a feeling before I can.

And finally, coffee is key. Especially now that I have it milky, frothy and foamy. ☕️

That’s a little more of me. What’s one thing that’s always felt like you? by @flothroughit

Who knew treatment had so many rules?

And who knew that sometimes, following them perfectly was actually just another way for me to execute perfectionism.

I’m not saying break all the rules. I’m saying get curious about the ones you really struggle with.

Why do you hate this rule so much?
Why is it so hard to face?
What are you scared will happen if you don’t follow it perfectly?

I’ll go first 🙋🏼‍♀️
The rule: follow your meal plan
Me: I could follow a meal plan perfectly. Right food. Right amount. Right time.

But change the plan unexpectedly? That was much harder.

And that taught me something.

SOMETIMES THE RULE ISN’T THE LESSON, YOUR REACTION TO IT IS *mic drop*

It happens when you follow your meal plan without someone there reassuring you that it’s okay.

When you rest even though your eating disorder is telling you that you should be doing something to make up for it.

When you resist the urge to check, count or ask for reassurance.

When you feel uncomfortable and, instead of immediately going back to the behaviour that normally makes that feeling easier, you try to sit with it.

A lot of recovery happens in these moments.
Nobody else might see them. Nobody might know how hard they were. There’s no praise or recognition afterwards.

But you know AND you are doing this for you at the end of the day.

You know that you did something differently. You know that you went against the eating disorder, even if only for that one moment.

Recovery isn’t only the progress other people can see. So much of it is the quiet work you’re doing when nobody is watching.

That counts too.

And if you need someone to tell — because I get that sometimes you just need someone else to know how hard that thing was — tell me. 🤍 by @flothroughit

Just as an eating disorder isn’t always visible, neither is recovery.

This is something I often talk about with people (and their loved ones) who fear that if they eat without distress others will suddenly think they are okay and stop offering support.

REMEMBER:
Someone can look calm while their mind is loud.
A finished meal does not equal fine.

You have no idea how loud someone’s mind is, and trust me it’s loud. How calm someone appears while eating tells you nothing about how hard they’re fighting. by @flothroughit

Do you know how many times I tried to explain my choices, decisions and changes to someone who just wasn’t going to get it?

I kept thinking that maybe if I explained it differently, they’d finally understand.

News flash: they didn’t. So what happened?

Eventually, I realised I didn’t need them to.

Was it easy? No. It’s hard to stop trying to prove yourself and every action to people you love.

But I knew what I needed. by @flothroughit

Often, when we’re in recovery ourselves, we desperately want to help other people who are struggling. 🤍

This was something I felt deeply in the early days of my recovery. When I saw someone else struggling, I wanted to say the right thing, make it better and carry some of the pain for them—especially because I understood it so well.

But I slowly learned that caring for someone doesn’t mean becoming responsible for their recovery. I had to protect my own recovery first.

Now, being able to support others as a coach is one of the most incredible and meaningful parts of my life. Protecting my recovery didn’t mean I cared less—it gave me the stability and perspective to help others without losing myself.

You can listen, care and encourage someone to seek appropriate support while maintaining boundaries that protect your wellbeing.

You can walk beside someone without losing yourself along the way. 🌿
