[thoughts] Little Rot - Akwaeke Emezi 🥀

Now that I’m over the shock - I thought I’d share some thoughts 🤪

1️⃣. Thank the Lord that Emezie can write or else I’d have accused them of trying to steal Jackie Phamotse’s niche 🤭
2️⃣. I started feeling like such a prude, so much sex?! what about isdima sam?
3️⃣. Always intrigued at how far Emezie will take things, fascinating in that it makes you think. There’s just so much grey, and it forces you to interrogate your own views of morality, sex, power.
4️⃣. On a more serious note, the inevitability of a failing/collapsing state when things like insecurity, corruption and economic hardship are accepted and allowed to flourish - “moral decay seeps into every fibre of life”.
5️⃣. Put everyone in jail 🧍🏾‍♀️
6️⃣. Read the book 😤

🩸 No One Dies Yet (NODY) - Kobby Ben Ben

In true Kobby-style (the character), I made sure to get my booksta pics taken while unpacking the wild, hallucinatory, rollercoaster ride that was reading this book 🤭

Told from the perspective of Kobby and Nana, NODY gives us a look into liberal vs. traditional Ghana, queer identity and life, and the tensions that emerge when Black Americans “return home” — all while sticking to its crime thriller roots (no one was safe yoh 😂)

What a weird, raw, yet freeing read, worth “struggling” through as Kobby (the author this time) lays bare the quiet violence of gentrifiers/digital nomads/returnees’ who arrive, quietly reshaping local lives and displacing the very people they claim to reconnect with.

Anyway…read it. Struggle through it. African literature is worth it 😠

“7 books until you’re back on track! You can do this!” - @the.storygraph

Did I not scream and immediately seek out the books that I still need to read with less than 200 pages?

My brain is on sleep mode, but heres to a short (and hopefully sweet) reading adventure 🤭

let me know if you’ve read anything in the pile, I’d love to know ✨
