I’ve been creating something and I am so excited to share with you! 🌸

Flower Folk is a space for people to gather, learn about and celebrate the beauty of plants, while building meaningful connections and community.

Through in person workshops, retreats and events I hope to inspire creativity, revive old traditions, spread plant knowledge and build community 🌼

I believe that when we reconnect with nature and with one another, we create positive change in the world.

‘All flourishing is mutual’ - Robin Wall Kimmerer

The link to my website where you can find out more is in my bio. I so hope you will join me and share in the magic of plants 🌼🍓

On Saturday, the sun shone bright for the very first @flowerfolk__ workshop - Summer Herbs and Medicine Making 🌸 and my heart is still so unbelievably full 💓

We gathered under the shade of a large oak to learn about medicinal herbs all gathered from the surrounding fields that very morning (see pic of my car looking and smelling like a meadow!🌼). We discussed plant folklore, botany, herbal energetics and shared our own stories, observations and connection to plants too. We made rose, lavender and hypericum creams and each bundled our own personal selection of herbs based off the mornings discussion to dry for tea.

We sipped on refreshing glasses of Meadowsweet cordial and nibbled on Almond and Meadowsweet cake.

These mornings are exactly what @flowerfolk__ and my offerings are about - bringing people together to learn from and celebrate plants! I feel so grateful and blessed to do this. Thank you to everyone who came! 🦋

Thank you also to @king_johns_nursery for providing the most beautiful setting for Flower Folk workshops and events to take place. The Garden is looking so romantic and whimsical - I couldn’t recommend a visit more.

The next workshop is on Saturday 18th July and will be learning how to press flowers and creating pressed flower art work to take home.

I am also hosting a botanical supper club - a three course dinner using foraged and grown produce - each dish will be inspired by the season. It will also be an opportunity to meet and connect with new people 🌼 by @flowerfolk__

I always forget to take photos during workshops 🤦‍♀️ but that’s because we are so busy having fun out in the fields and woodlands foraging 😉

Here are a couple of photos from the table we gathered around to make our preserves - a rosehip syrup and sloe vinegar- the apple and walnut cake we ate with a freshly gathered nettle and chamomile tea and an unrelated photo of my lovely friends picking grapes outside my home later that evening post workshop! 🍇

I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend! We’d love for you to join a workshop this month - there are a couple in the coming weeks so if you’re interested, do take a look at the website (link in bio) for more info! by @flowerfolk__

A herbal tea to help you transition from late summer to Autumn 🍵

There are many ways to help your body transition to seasonal shifts - eating warmer, slower cooked foods, sleeping more etc - but one very simple way that I recommend to everyone and anyone is making a herbal tea! These four herbs are beautiful allies to help transition from Summer to Autumn and all of them you can find either in your garden or on a walk.

Let me know if you have any questions and enjoy getting cosy! All love. Xx by @flowerfolk__

Two edible wild greens to forage this September! 💚

1. Nettle 🌿
- High in iron
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-histamine
- Delicious in soups, stews, steamed and sautéed
( make sure to only harvest the fresh green tops and not from plants which have got seeds!)

2. Sheep Sorrel🌿
- Rich in micronutrients (magnesium & potassium)
- Super tasty and tart flavour
- Delicious in salads
(Contains oxalic acids but you’d need to eat an awful lot to experience the effects)

Nettle & Sorrel Sauce:
- big bunch nettles
- 2 handfuls sheep sorrel
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Nutritional yeast or Parmesan
- Toasted pine nuts
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 1tbsp yogurt (plain or soy)
- (A little water to loosen)

1. Blend all of the ingredients! (Only add the water if needed to loosen)
2. Store in a jar in the fridge (lasts ~ 1 week)
Delicious stirred through grains, pastas or as a salad dressing!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments! 💚🌿 by @flowerfolk__

FENNEL 💛

~ A plant of illumination, the carrier of divine fire! ~

Fennel’s history begins with fire. In her earliest mythological identity, Fennel carried Divine fire from the realm of the Gods to the realm of humanity in the hollow of her stem. Fennel has been illuminating humans since the beginning of time!

The region, Marathon, (which the 26.2-mile run is named after), was itself named after the ancient Greek word for Fennel, ma - ra - tu-wo. Fennel grew abundantly all over Marathon and so this does make great sense and Marathon, in ancient Greek means, ‘plant growing high’, which makes even greater sense…

Medicinally, Fennel is dear ally, soothing upset digestive systems. The theme of fire continues here too - in Ayurvedic medicine, Fennel is known to ignite the digestive fire, ‘Agni’.

To hear more about the botany, folklore, medicinal benefits, a fennel and lemon cake recipe and soo much more, you might like to have a little read of my latest Substack post! The link for which is in my bio! It is completely free.

~ Fennel Flower & Lemon Cupcakes ~

I’ve been dreaming about this combination all week long! 🧚 And all the rain this afternoon felt like the perfect excuse to try it out!

If you aren’t familiar with fennel already, please let this be your introduction! She is magnificent - in every way. More on that to come, but for now, just trust me when I say she’ll brighten up your cooking.🌼

Fennel is one of my all-time favourite herbs, and I think we often work with her seeds and forget that the flowers are just as delicious added to dishes too?! 🌿

Anyhow - the recipe is also below, in case you can’t ready my writing. 💛🌼✨

RECIPE
~ Ingredients:
100g sugar (I use coconut)
100ml olive oil
3 eggs
100g buckwheat flour
50g coconut flour (you could just use 150g plain flour)
1 tsp baking powder
1 lemon (juice and zest)
1 medium courgette
2 large fennel flower heads
~ for the icing ~ coconut yogurt, honey, lemon and fennel flowers

Method:
1. Finely grate courgette and squeeze out the liquid through a sieve
2. In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, olive oil and eggs
3. Little by little, stir in the flours and baking powder to combine
4. Squeeze in 1/2 lemon juice and zest. Add in courgette. Stir all. Fold through flower florets, stems removed.
5. Spoon into cupcake cases & bake at 180 Celsius for 25-30 mins until just golden brown on top.
6. Leave to cool. Whip all icing ingredients together.
7. Once cool, teaspoon on a little icing to each and decorate with a fennel flower and more zest.
8. Enjoy! 🌼
