Know your wave! here's a quick
breakdown of the main parts every surfer should know.
* Peak: The highest or steepest part of the wave where it starts breaking, usually where you want to catch the wave.
* Lip: The top edge of the breaking wave that pitches forward and falls down the face.
* Wall / Face: The clean, unbroken surface of the wave that you ride along.
* Shoulder: The softer, less powerful part of the wave away from the peak.
* Impact Zone: The area where the breaking lip lands its generally the place you want to avoid when paddling out.
* Whitewash / Water: The broken, foamy water created after the wave has broken.
* Pocket: The area closest to the breaking part of the wave, where the wave is steepest and most powerful.
* Barrel: The hollow section where the lip throws over and creates a tube.
* Closeout Section: Where the wave breaks across the whole face at once, leaving little or no open face to ride.

The renders are in! 🌴🏄‍♂️
For everyone who’s been curious about what we’ve been building... here it is.
Our vision is simple: create a place where surfers can come together. Somewhere to meet like-minded people, recover after a long session, kick back, swap stories, and enjoy an ice-cold Bintang after a big day in the water.
We’re getting closer to bringing it to life, and we can’t wait to share more of the journey with you.

Want better balance and more control on your surfboard? It starts with your stance.
A good surfing stance is shoulder-width apart, with your knees bent, weight centred and arms relaxed for balance. Stand too wide and you can lose mobility and make turns harder.
Too narrow, and you may struggle to stay stable.
Master the basics and you’ll build a stronger foundation for every wave.
At Flow State, our Bali surf camp, we focus on the fundamentals that help you become a more confident surfer, from pop-up technique and surfboard control to wave selection and ocean awareness.
Save this for your next surf session! (

Not every wave that looks good is actually surf-able

The key is reading what happens down the line, a tapered shoulder gives you room to work, while an incoming peak can shut the whole thing down.

Can you spot the difference?

Ever wondered how to spot an A-frame before it breaks?

Look for a defined peak with waves peeling away on both sides. The peak will usually looks steeper and darker, while the shoulders become flatter with lighter shadows.
Once you know what to look for, spotting good A-frames in the lineup gets a whole lot easier!

Want to catch more waves? It starts with putting yourself in the right spot. 🌊

The peak is where the wave has the most power. Position yourself closer to it and you’ll have more energy helping you get into the wave, making the takeoff easier and giving you a better chance of getting a good ride.

Learning where to sit in the lineup and recognising where a wave is going to break can make a massive difference to your surfing.

At Flow State Surf Camp in Bali, we focus on helping you read the ocean, improve your positioning and ultimately spend more time actually surfing waves. 🤙

Positioning is everything
As a beginner, you want to be close to the peak, but not directly in front of it.
The closer you are to the peak, the more power the wave has. Get too far down the shoulder and the wave loses energy, making it much harder to catch.
Find the peak. Get into position. Let the wave do the work.

Why is it so important to identify the peak of a wave? 🌊
The peak is where the wave has the most energy and where it will usually start to break first.
Learning to spot it helps you position yourself in the right place before the wave reaches you.
Too far out on the shoulder → you might miss it.
Too deep → you could get caught behind the section.
Find the sweet spot → easier take-off, more speed and more wave to work with.
The better you get at identifying the peak, the better you’ll get at reading waves, choosing your take-off spot and catching more of the good ones.
Next time you’re in the lineup, don’t just watch the waves — watch where they peak. 🌊🤙
