We’ve taken some time to reflect on the closure announcement, and we want to speak a bit more openly about the decision.

Flux has always been a labour of love. Since opening just before the pandemic, we've weathered some wild years. But things change — and so has our capacity to keep up.

Running a space like this has never been easy. Even in the best moments, it’s taken everything we’ve had to keep it going. Financially, the pressures have been real — especially through a cost of living crisis — and continuing as we are just isn’t sustainable.

But it’s not just about money. Giving this place what it deserves — creatively, emotionally, mentally — is a huge commitment. And right now, we’re not in a position to give it our best.

What we are proud of — above all — is the community. The dancers, DJs, artists, promoters, and wildcards who made this space their own. Watching those communities adopt Flux so fiercely, so protectively, so proudly — that’s been our biggest reward.

It’s been incredible to see Flux evolve into what it is today — of the artists it’s uplifted, of the scenes it’s been part of, and most of all, of the communities that have made this space their own. Those are the people we’ve done it for, and they’re who we’ll continue to hold at the heart of any next steps. We hope those same communities will help shape whatever’s next. Because Flux has always been about more than four walls and a bar. It’s been a safe space, a platform, a pulse point for underground culture in Ōtautahi. That doesn’t disappear.

We’ve had such an amazing time with this space. Thank you for being part of it.

After five unforgettable years of holding it down in the Boxed Quarter, Flux is coming to a close.

We’ll be sharing more next week about why — but for now, just know that we’re proud of everything this space has meant and stood for since opening right before COVID hit in 2020.

A massive shoutout to all the amazing artists, promoters, community and legendary crew that made Flux something to remember. We’ve got a couple of open dates left in the calendar — if you’re one of our longtime collaborators or promoters and want to help send us off right, hit us up.

Saturday, August 23rd will be our closing party. We’re planning something massive. Stay tuned for the drop!

Calske is a Tāmaki Makaurau-based DJ and promoter who draws inspiration from all corners of the music world. He has played alongside the likes of Skin on Skin and played support for artists such as X-Coast, Bakey & Breaka, Hamdi, Yung Singh, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Peaky Beats, Killjoy and Papa Nugs.

He’s the solo founder of Glass Half Full, a label / events company / platform for a wide variety of both local and international artists & DJs to play shows, and post mixes + original music. Not one to stick to one sound but plays everything from house to trance to electro and the underground sounds of UK garage and dubstep, to the uptempo sounds of footwork and jungle.
