Maybe not the sexiest part of festival life, but sponsors are the lifeblood of this production. Major thank you from the bottom of our hearts to these businesses and individuals who stepped up to support the arts and this operation. We see Fly Around as a celebration of our artists as well as the community of Lansing, and we couldn’t make it happen without their support.
We believe in arts funding as economic development, community building and building a more beautiful world.

Closing the festival last year, Magic Tuber invited up artists to join an all acoustic jam, accompanied by Appalachian archival and nature films curated and projected by @thomas.hansell. Our videographers @j_barb and @groceghost captured the hallucinatory and joyous closing ritual and created a beautiful film that comes as close to being in the room as we can imagine.
This year we’re premiering the film alongside a curation from Tom Hansell as well as Daniel Bachman’s 2023 climate change album and film @almanacbehind , presented by festival partners @mtntrue and @appstate_appstudies in an all new film room from 1-6pm Sat Aug 1st at Lost Province Arts.
BONUS: @magictuberstringband performs Thursday July 30 @huzzahbooks to kick off Fly Around 2026 high country weekend!

The most fulfilling part of Fly Around is working with artists and giving them space and an audience to create. Jess Kimball created these quilt designs to cover our new acoustic panels for the schoolhouse stage, and when Erin Banks offered to do some painting, Chris tossed out this idea of a 3D Photo Booth of @brainflowerdesigns poster art. And as a bonus, Yuwa Roten reached out to perform a violin concerto for @lostprovincearts fundraiser, it was a beautiful performance on the stage we’ve been gussying up for Fly Around. And wow, they all three did an incredible job.
Festivals like ours are a celebration of community and art, two things we all need more of!

Fly Around Fest folks! 🎻🎻🎻

In the morning before the music starts, stop by the Windfall Shop downtown to learn the anatomy and nuances of fiddles. The class is free, but we do appreciate you pre-registering for the class (link in bio) if possible.

Our instructor, Dick Wilson, is a High Country musician, luthier and instrument repairman based in Lansing. At his store Friends Music in Boone, he spent decades working with instruments and musicians across the region, including playing alongside Doc Watson and his somewhat adopter, Ola Belle Reed herself. His teaching is rooted in lived experience. Bench work, jam circles, and a deep respect for Appalachian music traditions. Almost no one could be more central to the true heart of @flyaroundfest

Now for the meta bit: the fiddle in this graphic is one of Dick's builds, photo provided by the one and only Trevor McKenzie @tallesthemlock who plays one of them. The music for this post is an Ola Belle song played by Tim O'Brien, who toured and recorded with a fiddle built by Dick for years. There we go!

Fly Around embraces set and setting, bringing you music in a place that has been dear to the community for generations. This year we’re showcasing this jewel in our town, the old Lansing School. Built to last in the 1930’s by the WPA during the New Deal, to create jobs, expand skills and bring a formal education to the Lost Province. Today @lostprovincearts is working to raise funds to bring the building back to its glory as a community arts center.
Fly Around isn’t just a concert, it’s a chance to connect, to celebrate and to help preserve a cultural landmark in rural Western North Carolina. Music and art are the backbones of community. taken in Lost Province Center for Cultural Arts by @flyaroundfest

I wanted to play y’all this classic Ola Belle Reed tune because she’s from Lansing, NC - and that’s where I’m headed July 31 for Fly Around Fest! Fly Around started last year and is a lovely up and coming local festival that showcases all sorts of regional talent. The funds from ticket purchases help support the Lost Province School in Lansing which is dedicated to preserving Southern Appalachian culture. We’ll be set up inside the Lansing General Store. It’d be a shame to miss it! I hope to see y’all there so you can catch some of Revenant’s pieces - I’ll be joined by Trevor McKenzie and Grey Hyatt.
