Utah Fly Fishing Guide
Travel Serve Fish

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Huge surprise on day 1 of this trip.

Last year I spent 25 days on the hunt for a DIY permit. Caught one with a guide, but left empty handed on the DIY.

These fish give you just a taste of adrenaline… then leave you craving more with no sign of when it’ll happen again.

Until finally, you get another taste. #permitonthefly #flyfishingbelize by @flyfish_life

What a surreal experience this trip to Belize has been. The night before my flight, I had a thought to tie up some floating crabs since on rare occasions, permit will eat a floating crab when sargassum is present. I googled pictures of sargassum crabs and came up with my own pattern to closely match a real one. After I tied that fly I had a Deja voo like experience where I knew that this was the fly that I would catch my first permit on. I didn’t want to jinx myself so I kept quiet about it and today on my trip with Kyle, we started seeing large permit and he told me to put on my floating crab after a few refusals on my other weighted crabs. I knew that this was the moment I was preparing for. After a couple shots at them, 2 large permit raced to eat my crab. I will never forget the image of their eyes out of the water aggressively eating my crab on the surface. I strip set and I was in for an experience that is truly indescribable. Through tough and windy conditions, I was blessed with a perfect scenario to catch such an elusive fish in a way that is even more special. Thank you @kyle_requena for putting me on this fish! taken in Caye Caulker, Belize by @flyfish_life

Chasing big brookies took us farther than we expected - and that was the best part.

Miles of exploring, tangled line, missed fish, and finally watching a beautiful brook trout come to hand in a place that felt completely untouched.

These are the days that remind me why I love exploring new water. It’s never just about the fish - it’s about everything it takes to find them.

If you’d chase brook trout into the middle of nowhere with us, share this with the person you’re bringing. 🎣🏔️
Shoutout - @outcastsportinggear for the incredible float tube.

@flyfish_life recently took us down one of the most popular stretches of water in the state of Utah on his trusty @riverratus 3 man raft. This river is very polarizing and often a hot topic of contention. From the enormous amount of traffic it receives and access issues regarding land ownership, it is often avoided by many anglers. But one thing for certain is it holds some of the best trout water in the entire state, especially when approached from a raft with a skilled captain.

Not only is Austin a great friend, but I can’t speak highly enough about his abilities and knowledge as a guide on these waters.

And when it comes to rafts, I don’t believe there is a better option on the market than what the boys over at River Rat are putting out. When it comes to cost, quality, and performance their product is unmatched.

We left the guide trip planning to go swimming.

A few minutes later, we were rescuing stranded trout instead.

It’s a reminder that the greatest adventures aren’t always the ones you plan they’re the moments when you choose to leave a place better than you found it.

The outdoors have given us so much. The least we can do is give something back. Whether it’s picking up trash, helping wildlife when it’s safe to do so, or speaking up for the rivers we love, conservation starts with ordinary people making small choices.

Adventure isn’t just about where you go. It’s about what you leave behind.

👇 What’s one thing you’ve done to help wildlife or a wild place? I’d love to hear your story.

A good net job lands more fish than a perfect cast.

Most fish are lost in the final few seconds because anglers chase them with the net instead of letting the fish come to them.

A few simple rules:
🎣 Keep the fish’s head up.
🎣 Let the fish glide over the net.
🎣 Scoop once don’t stab at it.
🎣 Keep the net in the water whenever possible.

A calm finish protects the fish, protects your tippet, and gives you a much better chance of landing your catch.

Follow for your pocket fly fishing guide.

A lot of anglers make fly patterns way more complicated than they need to be.

This simple two-material fly has been one of my confidence patterns right before a blue wing hatch, especially when fish are keyed in on smaller bugs but aren’t fully rising yet.

Simple. Fast. Effective.

Save this one for your next BWO day.

Most anglers think deep lakes grow bigger fish. That’s not always true.

Some shallow lakes can grow incredible bug life like scuds and other food sources.

More food often means faster growth and bigger trout.

Don’t overlook shallow lakes this season.

Save this for your next scouting trip.

If you’re after big brook trout, this fly deserves a spot in your box.

I call it Trout Candy.

One of my most productive brook trout patterns. The color combo definitely does something to these fish.

It’s fooled a pile of brookies over 20” and earned a permanent spot in my box.

Simple materials. Deadly results.

Would you fish it?
