I LOVE MONTANA! 🏔️

Montana is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been too and has some of the best fishing I’ve ever experienced. The wildlife in this state is so plentiful and biodiverse, it is truly one of a kind. The rivers are densely populated with different types of fish and aquatic insect species, making for some amazing fishing opportunities! Due to the copious amount of these different insect species, there are hatches happening all the time all throughout the year. We experienced many hatches during our trip, most notably, mayfly, caddis, and stonefly hatches(see slide 4.) These insects larval and adult stages make up a large majority of the trout’s diet in not just Montana, but all over the country, including good ole’ Arkansas! Although, the amount of bugs in AR doesn’t even compare to the insane numbers there are in Montana. For trout, more bugs mean more feeding opportunities, which means they are more aggressive and more likely to take a fly. On top of that, more feeding means bigger fish. So in Montana, there are a ton of giant and aggressive fish willing to bite a wide variety of flies all throughout the year. That seems like some pretty good fishing to me 🤷‍♂️. Through biodiversity and sheer numbers, Montana is set apart from other fisheries and known as one of the best trout fishing destinations in the country, maybe even the world!

THANK YOU MONTANA!!! See you soon! 👀

BUNCHA MONTANA BROWNIES 🤪

I LOVE brown trout! Arguably one of the prettiest trout species in the world, browns are my favorite trout species to target and Montana was full of them! @fultonrodie and I have caught our fair share coming into this trip but @asher_smothers was yet to catch his first. That changed very quickly. Asher caught his first brown on the Ruby River, then caught an even bigger one on the Beaverhead River later that week. Safe to say, expectations were met then exceeded after catching his PB and then breaking it within a week. As for me and Fulton, no PBs were broken but we still caught some hogs and had a great time doing it. Thank you beautiful Montana!!!

More Montana Pics and Vids coming soon!

FIRST FISH EVER!

My buddy, @gwbaker_10, had never caught a fish or really ever been fishing. A true level 1 fisherman 😂. Even though he had no prior experience, Baker learned quite quickly how to cast, steadily retrieve, and fight a fish! This big brown was in some deep and murky water at the end of a current looking for an easy meal. Since it’s post spawn there will be a lot of fry(baby trout) emerging from the rocks. This makes it a perfect time to throw a small crank or stick bait, imitating a fry or other small fish. Knowing this I tied baker on a small trout-colored crank bait, and sure enough, that big brown smacked it. Baker had no concept of what a trophy fish was so once we got the fish in the net I had to tell him how crazy it was that his first fish was a 20 inch brown. After my buddy Joey caught two big browns with me his first time on the river and now this, I 100% believe in beginners luck 😂. I was able to hook up on a couple later that day but nothing like that beautiful brown. I’m excited to get out there again and maybe see if there are some bigger fish hiding in that murky water 🫣

I ❤️ Steelhead

Out of the few guided trips that I have been on, this was the best by far. Our guide, @mlgs.fish, was truly amazing. As someone who wants to be a guide, I really appreciated him going above and beyond teaching me new casting techniques, steelhead biology, and even different ways of rowing. The conditions we were fishing in were suboptimal to say the least. There had been no rain for a long time so all the tributaries and creeks they would normally fish were just too low. It was also early in the spawn so a lot of these fish were still in the lake. Even though we were fishing in these crappy conditions @mlgs.fish was able to improvise and even excel. We caught more fish than anyone next to us. I would love to talk about the techniques and flys he had us using but I don’t want to give away the secrets of the trade 🤫. If you would like to find out go check out his account or book a trip. I normally don’t do stuff like this but he is truly a great person and skilled guide, a real role model to someone like me. Thank you @mlgs.fish

It’s always good to see an old friend.

This little guy decided to eat my purple goby zman ned rig about 4 feet off the bank. I was on a play trip with some other white water guides so I took my bass rod with some minimal tackle to target some smallmouth. I had caught a couple smallmouth throughout the day but we were on the trip to hit some rapids, so I wasn’t able to fish that much. On the final float after everybody else was out of the water I hooked that flathead in my inflatable kayak. At first I thought it was a big smallmouth, then it started pulling drag and I thought it was a musky. Once he wouldn’t come off the bottom and I felt those distinct head shakes I knew it was a flathead. He pulled me around for about 10 minutes before I was able to grab him and put him in the front of my kayak and paddle to shore. It was definitely a fun fight with a medium-light wt rod and 6lb test. I’ve been catching and learning about these fish for a long time and I think there are some flathead much bigger than this one in the New River.

Goin crazy for these WV smallies! Some late night and early morning fish never hurt nobody 😮‍💨

I haven’t been able to land a true hog yet but l’m still on the hunt. The water temperature is in the mid to low 80s, so these fish are hanging out in the shade and strong currents waiting for an easy meal to come by.
The more I learn about these fish the more I realize that they are very much ambush predators. These smallmouth will hide behind rocks in the current and absolutely devour anything that happens to swim or drift by. Because of their camouflage they are able to swim right next to sedimentary rock or other kinds of underwater features and go almost completely undetected. When fishing for these smallmouth it’s almost like they appear from the river floor, and when you release them, they vanish again. I have grown a giant appreciation for these beautiful fish. Even though they can be little, they are for sure the hardest fighting p4p freshwater fish out there. And hopefully on one of these upcoming days I’ll land myself a New River behemoth!
Another update coming soon!

First trout ever happens to be a big brown for Jaxon!

Went fishing today and had to beat the water coming up so we had to go downriver. At first it wasn’t very productive but then we found what they were biting. We caught them on size 18 prince nymph, a custom size 20 sunday special tied by @dirtythirtyflyco , and a brown trout imitation lure (what the big brown was caught on). Other than the brown we caught mainly little rainbows. Fun day got caught short by rising water, but still got some good fish!

Big Browns come out in the rain!

Good day of fishing on the Little Red. Started raining a little into the day, but we kept on going. Caught a bunch of little rainbows, but the highlight of the day was the brown I caught on size 18 prince nymph. The caddis hatch was in full rhythm today and we took advantage of it. We caught a bunch on elk hair caddis and caddis midges. If fishing on the little red in the next couple weeks, CADDIS IS KING!👑
