I spent last week at Delta’s training center in Salt Lake City with some great friends and pilots, and we had the privilege of showing folks around and chatting a bit about what we do. I met some million milers (a few times over) and put some healthy reverb on a “WE ARE!” with a Penn State couple we’re almost collectively sure I’ve flown across the country at some point.

If we can’t agree on much, let’s at least agree that we’re a bit overdue for a few upgrades to the airline industry that would make all of our flying experiences a bit better.

Very grateful to have joined thousands of pilots who chose to advocate for you, for us, and for the safety of our industry in DC this week.

It’s always an honor to wear this uniform, it just comes with a few choice words in the dead of a DC summer when it’s made of wool. by @flyjackie_

Really grateful to have been a part of this weekend’s Delta Fantasy Flight from New York to the “North Pole”! We got to spend the evening with some of our Delta family’s nearest and dearest little ones who were treated to a private “flight” from LaGuardia to “the North Pole” (if you saw us taxiing very slowly across the LaGuardia ramp: no you didn’t), complete with dinner, snacks, goodies, trading cards, photos with Santa, a special passport to commemorate the trip, and of course - their very own Delta pilot wings. Even better, I got to join @pilot_tien and @ericathepilot for the fun. What a blast. We really do have the best gig in the world. 🔺🤍 taken in The North Pole by @flyjackie_

Today is my favorite day to be a pilot. It’s an honor to inhabit just a corner of people’s experiences in such a unique way, and it’s an exceptional honor to do so in a post-9/11 world. On a day the fundamental ideologies of freedom and independence and self-determination were threatened, those ideals became even more precious to protect. What an honor it is to celebrate them, whether on the ground or 38,000’ in the air with you.

Every year since 9/11, it seems more and more apparent that we have an inherent responsibility to protect and defend the ideals that make us who we are. To vote consciously. To speak expressively. To defend unwavering truths and to challenge ourselves. To exist in an ever changing world. To be.

We are so many things. A Great Experiment. An evolution. A powerhouse. A bastion of freedom. A shining city on a hill. At odds. At war. But we are exceptionally worth defending. by @flyjackie_

It’s a wonderful feeling when your friends are the ones who inspire you the most. Tien’s parents escaped communism and numerous Vietnamese reeducation camps in the 1970s and 80s and eventually sailed to Malaysia where Tien was born in a refugee camp. When her family eventually flew to Houston on Northwest in the 90s, she knew she wanted to fly for the company that flew her to freedom. Delta Air Lines and Northwest later merged and almost 31 years to the month after they landed in Houston, I was honored to join Tien at her Delta wings ceremony to celebrate a well-earned dream come true. Tien, you are an honor to know and privilege to celebrate. I couldn’t be prouder of you my dear friend. Welcome to the family. 🔺 taken in Delta Flight Museum by @flyjackie_

My dad was one of the original members of the Arlington Writers Group that was founded back in 2006, and it’s since grown to an enthusiastic crew of over 300 writers, editors, columnists, poets, and artists. They’ve met every Wednesday evening for almost 18 years, and my dad faithfully devoted 15 years of his Wednesdays to these meetings until he got too sick to attend them in person. Talking with them feels like a step back in time when dad was still here; it’s spent laughing and being reminded of stories about someone we all loved dearly.

A few weeks back, they let us know that the group entered into and won a contest that allowed them the opportunity to name a character in Kendra Elliot’s latest novel. And as Michael Klein, an OG member of the group, tells us: dad immediately came to mind. We were honored to learn that they worked with the author to name a character after him that they felt best fit his personality, and we were very grateful to be invited to their Wednesday meeting and presented with signed copies of At the River, which will be out on February 13th.

This past Halloween, I met with the Delta hiring team in Atlanta and told them I wanted to go as a Delta Air Lines pilot that day. Well, joke’s on me: they responded with an offer to make me the real deal. 🔺

I’ve said it before so please forgive my repetition: this is the most wonderful job in the world. What a privilege to be able to share in the big and small moments of people’s lives in this way.

A lot of things happened in 2023; some good, some very good. This was undoubtedly among the very best.

And thank you thank you especially to my dear friend @theresa_living who surprised me that afternoon - her day off - to present me with my offer letter. I can’t wait to fly with you. 🤍 taken in Delta Air Lines World Headquarters by @flyjackie_
