Galleys are here! My new book is about surveillance and threat and love and strangers forming unlikely friendships. This is my favorite book I’ve written, and I’m so excited for you to read it and bring the characters to life.

A GOOD MAN ON A DARK NIGHT is about Eleanor, a private nurse whose new patient, Anna, is suspected of being an enemy of the state.

You can request an early copy on Netgalley and Edelweiss! Which is crazy, given that not very long ago this book was a stack of chaotic handwritten pages on my desk. Thanks for reading!

New book is done! It’s about a woman named Eleanor, and it’s my favorite project I’ve ever worked on.

First picture shows the typed drafts, including line edits from my editor. Second picture is the handwritten first draft, which I’ve been hauling around with me for a year, hoping not to lose, etc.

Hope your reading and writing are going well this week! by @flynnberryauthor

Hello! I wrote about the true story of a suburban teenager with spies in her house, sixties food, a very very tricky friendship, and what happens when a novel idea arrives, but seems to belong to someone else (in this case, Tessa Hadley). Link in bio! by @flynnberryauthor

What a fun assignment to cast a thriller ballot for @nytbooks! Ten is a comically small number to choose, but each of these books lives in my head, and I’m so glad to have them there.

And I’ve loved seeing all the other ballots! @nytimes by @flynnberryauthor

Hello! I’ve just started Novels I Don’t Have Time to Write, about true stories of mystery.

Often I come across ideas for novels, and I wanted a place to write them down. These are true cases of crime, espionage, secrets, and intrigue. This month’s is The London Witch, the woman accused of being a witch during World War Two. It’s a witchcraft trial, but in 1944.

And coming soon: an unlikely art thief, a heroic bank robber, and a neighborhood sleeper spy.

It’s free, and monthly. Link in bio and in stories! Hope to hear about your novels you don’t have time to write, too.

What I’ve been reading!
-CALLER UNKNOWN by @gillianmauthor, who is a genius at taking a classic premise (a ransom in this one) and then bursting it apart in such surprising directions. I love the humanity and soulfulness of her thrillers.
-BITE BY BITE by @aimee_nezhukumatathil ooooh I love her writing. This book ranges around a food or ingredient (vanilla, kaong, gyro, figs, shave ice, mangosteen), with literature and history and politics and mythology and motherhood. Also the Lightning Research Center in the Swiss Alps and “cubed watermelons, a little bigger than a Rubik’s cube” in Japan.
-THE KEEPER by Tana French, which I adored. Maybe my favorite of hers yet? But it seems absurd to rank her books, they’re each such a complete universe.
I was listening to the bonkers Sean Casey special by @anirishhistory while reading The Keeper, and they’re a great pairing (Irish countryside, feud). by @flynnberryauthor

Ten years old this month! I love these different titles and their beautiful covers and seeing how Nora is translated into other versions of herself. My friend Ainsley is a translator and talking with her about her work is one of my favorite things in the world. I’m so glad to have Nora living in translation.

- Japanese edition translated by Toshiki Taguchi @hayakawashobo
- French edition translated by Valérie Malfoy @pressesdelacite
- Spanish edition translated by Luz Achával Barral @principaldeloslibros
- German edition translated by Wolfgang Thon @aufbau_verlage
- Swedish edition translated by Rebecca Alsberg @lbforlag

A stack of books from researching Northern Spy and Trust Her. I could talk about these books all day, but to start:

- Constellations by @sineadgleeson is a book I’d never lend, because I so often want to go back and read parts of it. It’s magnificent.

- @thewrengirl writes characters who stick in my mind for years and years. (I’m still worrying about Gina from The Forgotten Waltz.) Her writing makes me see and think more sharply.

- So does Eavan Boland’s poetry.

- Dirty Laundry by @dishabossy was so brilliant I was reading it while walking.

- Rough Beast by @mairia.cahill is an absolute rocket of a memoir.

- This Happy by @niamh_campbell_xx has the sort of dense authenticity I associate with @maggieofarrellofficial’s contemporary novels.

- Trespasses by @louise.kennedyy has so much power in it. I love her story collection too, and am over the moon she has a new novel coming out soon. by @flynnberryauthor

Five years old today. Here is what it looked like as a first draft (not like a book!). This was one of the first scenes I wrote, when Tessa notices torches in the field behind her house. She had no idea what they were doing there, and neither did I. I loved finding out with her.

I’m still in disbelief that @reesewitherspoon chose it for April 2021.

There was a big group chat with all the @reesesbookclub readers the morning of the announcement, and the server glitched, which made typing difficult, so everyone started sending photos of their dogs and cats. Looking at people’s pets from all over the world was the nicest possible publication day.
If you were on that, please pass along my thanks to your dog or cat. by @flynnberryauthor
