One trauma response many of us carry is the belief that we must do everything alone. It comes from years of being let down, overlooked, or forced to survive without support. After a while, hyper‑independence feels safer than trusting anyone. But that response, while understandable, becomes a heavy burden. It keeps us isolated. It makes us think collaboration is weakness. And it stops our community from growing the way it could.

This trauma shows up everywhere in our culture. Brilliant people try to build businesses alone. Parents try to raise families without a village. Leaders try to carry movements on their backs. We push ourselves to exhaustion because we don’t want to be disappointed again. But when we operate like that, we lose the power of collective genius. We lose the strength that comes from shared vision, shared labor, and shared love.

The All Black National Convention exists to break that pattern. It’s a place where you don’t have to do everything by yourself. You can connect with people who think like you, build with people who believe what you believe, and accomplish things together that none of us could do alone.

A paycheck is not a financial security plan.

I’m Dr. Boyce Watkins. I have a PhD in finance, and I’ve studied these issues for 30 years.

The evidence should wake us up: Federal Reserve data for 2024 show that only 35% of nonretired adults believed their retirement savings were on track. And 45% of adults lacked a dedicated emergency fund covering three months of expenses. (federalreserve.gov)

Those statistics don’t prove jobs prevent wealth. They expose how fragile financial security can be.

A job can become a sleeping pill when the comfort of payday puts your dreams to sleep.

Consumer debt, student loans, and auto payments can turn your next paycheck into money already promised to somebody else. Obligations can keep you in a workplace you desperately want to leave.

I’m not shaming employment. A job can fund investments, retirement accounts, and ownership. But what good is a job if decades of working never deliver financial security?

Outsourcing your future to a corporation leaves your family exposed when layoffs, benefit cuts, or shifting priorities arrive. Corporate loyalty is not an asset you own.

Here is the financial truth: income becomes wealth when you retain it and build assets. Employment can fuel that process. A paycheck alone cannot finish it.

Amazon deserves consideration as a long-term investment because its business reaches far beyond delivering packages. Amazon Web Services powers businesses through cloud computing, while advertising and Prime subscriptions provide additional revenue streams. Its investments in artificial intelligence could create opportunities for growth across these businesses.

As a finance PhD, I look for companies with competitive advantages, multiple growth engines, and opportunities to reinvest profits. Amazon’s scale, infrastructure, and customer relationships make its long-term investment case compelling.

But a great company can still be a disappointing investment if you pay too much.

Amazon faces aggressive competition, regulatory scrutiny, and pressure from tariffs and weaker consumer spending. Its enormous investments in artificial intelligence and data centers also consume cash, and future returns might fall short of expectations.

My perspective: consider Amazon within a diversified portfolio, evaluate its valuation, and think in years. Strong growth does not eliminate the possibility of significant stock declines.

I have a PhD in finance, and personally, I find selling stock options the best way in the world to make money. But enthusiasm must come with honest math.

Imagine buying a $327,000 multifamily property entirely with cash. Assuming $2,500 in total monthly rent and reserving 50% for operating expenses, vacancies, and repairs, you’d keep approximately $1,250 monthly before income taxes. That’s an illustration, not a market average. Financing reduces cash flow.

Now consider owning $329,000 of Robinhood stock and selling covered calls. A hypothetical $17,000 premium month represents approximately 5.2%—an aggressive scenario, NOT a conservative monthly expectation. Without specific strikes, expirations, and executable quotes, that figure remains unverified.

Everybody loves a strong woman until she says no.
In this episode of She Looks Fine, a frozen card sparks a confrontation between a mother and daughter. But underneath the argument is something much deeper: guilt, resentment, broken communication, and the exhausting expectation that one woman must keep everybody else together.

Being the person who always figures it out can become an unpaid job in your family.

Research on learned helplessness shows that uncontrollable adversity can reduce attempts to change a situation, even when opportunities become available. Experiences of control can help restore persistence. The issue isn’t simply laziness; it can involve expecting that nothing you do will matter.

Disability itself is not learned helplessness. Real limitations deserve accommodations, compassion, and sustained support. But families can also develop a painful loop: one person feels powerless, another takes over, and both get temporary relief. Over time, that arrangement may leave fewer opportunities to practice manageable responsibilities.

The financial cost can include depleted savings, growing debt, and delayed retirement. The emotional cost can include exhaustion, resentment, anxiety, and feeling responsible for everyone’s survival.

Then comes the guilt: “You have money.” “We’re family.” “You’re really going to let us struggle?”

Guilt is a feeling, not automatic proof that your boundary is wrong.

Healthy support respects actual abilities: offer groceries, help review bills, or sit beside someone during a difficult call. Agree on what you can sustainably provide.

You can love your family and have limits.
