We set out from Lagos with Ibadan as our destination. But we didn’t land there. And no, it wasn’t because we got lost. 😂

Aviation doesn’t always go exactly according to plan. Weather can change, visibility can deteriorate, traffic can build up, and conditions that looked fine before departure can require a completely different decision in the air.

That’s why pilots and airlines constantly assess the situation and make decisions based on safety—not simply sticking to the original plan.

Sometimes that means delaying a flight. Sometimes it means diverting to another airport. And sometimes, like on our Lagos–Ibadan flight, it means overflying the destination and returning to where we started.

You’re not too young to start. Sometimes, you just need to know what’s possible.

At 17, I was already in flight school and only two years after I was flying solo from Zaria to Jos, Kano, and back to Zaria.

Safe to say, I also got a few surprised looks along the way. 😂

A3 SPOTLIGHT | AFRICAN AVIATION ADVOCATES (A3)

My name is Aniekanabasi Eyo @flywitheyo , and I’m a Nigerian commercial pilot and aviation content creator, I’m from Akwaibom state; currently based in Lagos. I’m also a drone pilot, working in the commercial UAV space, where I’m involved in aerial inspections, surveillance, and data collection for industrial operations.

My passion for aviation actually started when I was a child. My mum would buy me toy aircraft, and I became fascinated with them. At the time, I didn’t fully understand where that fascination would lead, but those little toys planted the seed for what would eventually become a career.

As I grew older, that curiosity developed into a genuine interest in aviation. I became fascinated not just by flying, but by the technology, engineering, people, and systems behind the industry.

I eventually began my professional journey at the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), where I trained from 2017 to 2020. I obtained my ICAO Diploma and went on to earn my Commercial Pilot Licence. During my training, I flew aircraft including the Diamond DA42 and Tampico, which further strengthened my passion for flying.

Since completing flight school, I’ve continued building experience within the aviation industry. While pursuing my airline career, I also moved into commercial drone operations, where I currently work on aerial inspections, surveillance, and data collection for industrial operations.

Today, my goal is to continue developing as a professional pilot, contribute meaningfully to the aviation industry, and eventually build beyond just flying. I’m particularly interested in aviation entrepreneurship and creating opportunities that can make aviation more accessible and sustainable in Nigeria.

CHALLENGES

One major challenge was the long waiting period after completing flight school in 2020. It wasn’t easy, but I stayed persistent, continued learning, and took up work as a UAV pilot while pursuing my goal of becoming an airline pilot.
