In 2018, the recycling, composting, combustion with energy recovery and landfilling of MSW saved over 193 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2E). This is comparable to the emissions that could be reduced from taking almost 42 million cars off the road in a year.

Recycled plywood wall boards. Sliced. Herringbone layout . Board size 24”x8”.

No matter how one does the calculations, the implications of current patterns of material use for the environment (including climate), the economy and our survival are profound and unsustainable. We must change the historical relationship of materials, energy, growth and the environment. When used carefully, materials hold the keys to enormous opportunity, both as our nation competes in the global economy and as we move into the 21st century. Used carelessly, materials hold another set of keys, which open equally large threats to our health, our economy and our environment. (Sustainable materials management: the road ahead )
