✨The Girls We Keep for @localwolves
Issue #75 Girlhood Edition ✨

So very thankful to have been part of this incredibly healing project with an amazing group of smart, talented and beautiful women - exploring how girlhood has shaped our lives.

Girlhood for me as a dark skinned black girl was anything but simple

I quickly learned that I would need to tone myself down in all ways to succeed and be accepted

I spent most of my girlhood making myself small and playing it safe, hiding behind being an athlete and a good student because that was palatable and respectable

Ive spent the past year+ since moving to LA trying to return to that authentic version of myself that I spent so many years suppressing

The girl who loved to play, wear vibrant colors and patterns, be unapologetically goofy and loud

This is for the version of me I didn’t feel like I could be

The version of me I’ve been having an absolute ball reuniting with 🧡 taken in Los Angeles, California by @fms.1496

🦋from the chrysalis🦋

My cocoon tightens, colors tease,
I’m feeling for the air;
A dim capacity for wings
Degrades the dress I wear.

A power of butterfly must be
The aptitude to fly,
Meadows of majesty concedes
And easy sweeps of sky.

So I must baffle at the hint
And cipher at the sign,
And make much blunder, if at last
I take the clew divine.

it always fascinates me how much I feel connected to people that lived long ago - who wrote spoke and felt things that resonate with me today. to me it’s proof that time is certainly not linear. anyways I just know me and Emily Dickinson would’ve been very good friends. taken in Los Angeles, California by @fms.1496

I LOVE the in between styles you can’t really recreate that only come after actually taking care of your hair in braids 🙃
