Advice to My Younger Self: Lessons for Success in the Trades/Starting Out in the Trades.
I reflect on what I would tell a younger self 11 years ago when first entering the trades. Looking back at early construction posts, I couldn’t have imagined their current position.

Key Lessons Learned
- 1) You Don’t Need to Know Everything Right Away. You’ll be surrounded by people who seem to have everything figured out. In reality, most skilled tradespeople learned through hands-on experience, mistakes, and gradual progress.
- 2) Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes. Mistakes are a natural part of learning—even experienced professionals make them.
Examples include cutting materials incorrectly, facing criticism, and redoing work to improve.
Fear of mistakes should not hinder growth or confidence.
- 3) Don’t Rush the Process. Prioritize quality over speed. Rushing leads to errors; speed improves naturally with time and experience. Care and attention to detail reflect overall work ethic.
- 4) Care About Your Work ”How you do anything is how you do everything”—a mindset that applies to all tasks, big or small. Taking pride in craftsmanship builds reputation and personal satisfaction.
- 5) Ask Questions And Continuous learning is essential. The best tradespeople keep learning through conversations, networking, and training—even after years in the field.
- 6) Find the Right Work Environment The early learning environment significantly impacts development. Seek employers who value teaching, growth, and quality workmanship.•Being around dedicated professionals accelerates learning and shapes standards.
- 7) Use Free Time to Educate Yourself•Platforms like Instagram and YouTube are powerful tools for skill development.•They offer access to new techniques, product knowledge, and connections with tradespeople worldwide.
- 8) Stick With It. Some days will be challenging or discouraging. Consistency, continuous learning, and pride in work lead to long term success. Over time, one can look back and recognize building not just structures, but an impressive career with their hands.

Project @cedarplanters Warehouse/Office.

I’m incredibly fortunate and very grateful for the opportunity to complete this warehouse project for Cedar Planters.

From the drywall stage to finish , I handled the entire office build-out — tile, flooring, trim, paint, backsplash, and all the finishing details in between.

Huge thank you to Jason And Haley at Cedar Planters for believing in my work and letting me have this opportunity to complete this work for them 🙏🙌🤘 by @fo22ie

@a_t_builds First Time In Algonquin, And Portaging. This was his first time ever camping.

He was not a fan of portaging but I was really impressed that he didn’t put down the heavier kayak once.

We got really lucky with the weather and the colour of the leaves changing. And 2 clear sky nights to view the stars. He said he enjoyed Algonquin and portaging camping and wants to go again 🤘
