On July 5th at SEA Market’s first day in the summer location, Laos In The House hosted a free workshop led by local auntie, Manica Thiphanh, to make stupas used in traditional Lao ceremonies. Originally made with banana leaves and flowers, we used synthetic materials so these modern versions can last longer. The Lao word for it is “khan mahk beng” (ຂັນໝາກເບັງ).We would like to thank @seamarket_fdrpark and @fo_fdrpark for having us alongside KPAC and DJ Holo for their first day in the summer location. It was a lovely day and we hoped all our participants of all ages enjoyed their first time making the stupa, plus a little lesson on Lao culture as much as Auntie Manica enjoyed teaching it. We hope to come back again. by @fo_fdrpark

Wildlife Wednesday at the Lakes!This week, our park staff member, Dallas, is back with another video featuring ants and aphids. It’s a great example of the fascinating relationships found in nature.There is a mutualistic relationship between ants and aphids in which the aphids secrete a sugary substance known as “honeydew,” and in return the ants will protect the aphids from predators and effectively farm this honeydew. In this video, you can see ants defending an aphid population from an attacking hoverfly larva, which is a major predator of aphids.
