Romance and affection are timeless. Across cultures, centuries, and corners of the globe, the pursuit of love has remained a familiar driving force. Here, in a painting from around 1680, two lovers embrace beneath a pavilion. Centuries stand between us, yet their closeness feels entirely familiar.

I wonder how much of what we pursue is tied to the desire to be desired. Even our drive to innovate, achieve, and distinguish ourselves can carry the hope of becoming more worthy of affection. More impressive, more desirable, more likely to be loved. Or so we think.

What if love was already embedded in our being? What if our worthiness of affection was never dependent on how exceptional we could become?

Anyway, look at these lovers.

I was not going to make this about colonialism. Just two European men dressed in Middle Eastern garb, looking rather pleased with the presentation. However, Europe’s history of arriving elsewhere and deciding what would look better in its possession does make it difficult to admire the outfits without a few questions.

To be fair, we do not know who these men were or how they came to be dressed this way. The painting does not settle the question of cultural appropriation, but it certainly invites the conversation. There is a difference between admiring a culture and treating it as a wardrobe. Where these two fall, I could not tell you.

Anyway, I do wonder what he’s pointing at.

Futurism perpetually lies in the past and present. At every stage in time, we imagine what lies ahead, and design is the beautiful expression of that impulse.

In Kiyoshi Niiyama’s photograph, reflective metal and ribbed glass feel remarkably familiar. Light fractures across the surface, softening the figures behind it into glimpses. Made between 1946 and 1959, the image holds a visual language we still associate with tomorrow.

I was annoyed, so naturally I started looking up oyster facts about irritation. They were not particularly fun, but I did feel seen. Get enlightened with me:

1. A pearl can begin with an irritant. Pearl oysters coat irritating material within their tissue in nacre as a protective response. What we admire as beauty begins as a need for protection.

2. The irritant does not necessarily disappear. It becomes enclosed in layers. There’s an interesting thought in that: building around an intrusion you have not been able to remove.

3. Oysters close their shells under stress. This protects them, but it also interrupts feeding. The same shell that shuts out danger can also shut out nourishment.

4. Not every hardship produces a pearl. Poor conditions can simply weaken an oyster. A supportive environment still matters.

Anyway, I made this poster. I might print it soon. Still frustrated though.

“Pandemic genius” is how I think of the creative brilliance that emerged during that difficult time. I find myself seeking out works dated 2020, curious about the focus and exploration that became possible for some artists amid the uncertainty. Amy Sillman’s Split 4 draws me into that curiosity.

Layered greens, interrupted by orange and dark, wandering marks, hold a beauty that may feel ugly to some and familiar to others. Our encounters with abstraction inform what we recognize, what we resist, and what we come to appreciate.

Here, I see transcendence and growth, freshness, a touch of innocence, and subtle joy. Then again, it’s all subjective. See what you want to see.
