How a Layered Heart Actually Works 💗

Step 1 — Build the base
• Fill the cup to about 40%
• Use an oval mixing motion
• Keep the cup tilted

Step 2 — Create the layers
• Start pouring from the upper 1/4
• Wiggle gently at 1 cm height
• Gradually straighten the cup while wiggling

Step 3 — Shape the heart
• Once it forms a half-circle, wiggle forward toward the center
• Let the base curl upward into a heart
• Lift the pitcher and cut through with a thin flow

How a Basic Swan Actually Works 🦢

Step 1 — Build the base
• Fill the cup to about 50%
• Start pouring from the center

Step 2 — Create the body
• Wiggle in the same spot until a semicircle shape forms
• Wiggle forward to let the base curl upward
• Wiggle back upward to build the wing structure

Step 3 — Shape the details
• Lift the pitcher and trace down the wing with a thin flow
• Lower the pitcher to create a white dot
• Finish with a soft reverse “S” motion and a small heart for the swan

Once the basic swan feels comfortable, it becomes much easier to branch into framed swans, slow swans and other variations later on ☕️

Want to pour more complex free pour designs?

Don’t jump straight into the complicated patterns.

Start with the Five Rosetta instead.

It might look simple, but it’s one of the best drills for building the four core skills behind almost every free pour design:

✔ Low flow rate control
✔ Milk flow control
✔ Cup rotation
✔ Wiggle control

Once these become second nature, advanced patterns feel much easier to learn and pour.

Save this post and give the Five Rosetta a try before your next practice session. ☕️✨

How a Framed Layered Heart Actually Works 💗

Step 1 — Build the Base

• Fill the cup to around 40%
• Tilt the cup as much as possible
• Use a soft oval integration motion to create a smooth canvas

Step 2 — Create the Frame

• Start pouring from the upper 1/4 of the cup
• Draw a smooth, centered half-circle to create the frame
• Once the half-circle forms, gently push it forward toward the center to create space for the layered heart

Step 3 — Build the Layers

• Start wiggling from the upper 1/4 of the frame
• Wiggle toward the center while building even, consistent layers
• Lift the pitcher once you reach the center
• Finish with a thin stream for a clean cut-through

How a Solid Heart Actually Works ♥️

Step 1 — Build the Canvas
• Fill the cup to around 40%
• Tilt the cup as much as possible
• Pour from about 10 cm high with a steady, consistent flow
• Use a soft oval integration motion

🔖 Pour Height Tip:
Pouring too high can make the milk hit the crema too hard and sink instead of blending smoothly.

Pouring too low can cause the foam to float on the surface too early, creating white stains before you begin the heart.

Step 2 — Form the Heart
• Start pouring from the upper quarter of the cup
• Lower the pitcher spout to about 0.5–1 cm above the surface
• Keep the milk stream steady and consistent
• Allow the pattern to expand naturally into a half-circle

Step 3 — Shape the Heart
• Once the half-circle forms, gently push the pitcher forward toward the centre
• Keep the pitcher centred and move in a straight line
• Continue pouring forward to shape and close the heart

Step 4 — Finish the Heart
• Lift the pitcher slightly to create a thinner stream
• Cut straight through the centre of the pattern
• Keep the final line centred and straight

⚡️ Avoid moving the pitcher sideways during the push and cut-through. A steady, centred movement creates a cleaner and more symmetrical heart.

How a Rosetta Actually Works 🌿

Step 1 — Build the Canvas

• Fill the cup to around 40%
• Keep the cup tilted as much as possible to create space
• Pour from about 10 cm high with a steady, consistent flow
• Use a soft oval integration motion

🔖 Pour Height Tip:
If the pour height is too high, the milk hits too hard, breaks through the crema, and sinks instead of blending into the surface.

If the pour height is too low, the milk foam floats on top of the crema too early, creating stains before you start drawing.

Step 2 — Build the Rosetta

• Start pouring from the centre
• Wiggle gently with the pitcher spout about 1 cm above the surface
• Slowly straighten the cup as the pattern expands

Step 3 — Finish the Rosetta

• Keep wiggling until the base naturally wraps into a heart shape
• When the cup is about 90% full, fully straighten the cup and wiggle backward a little faster
• Hold for about 3 seconds to form the heart
• Lift the pitcher straight up and cut through with a thin, steady stream
⚡️ Be careful not to get too close to the cup when finishing
