GOLDEN CROSSINGWhere morning crossed the sea.The light came up slowly over Arniston that morning. It was not a dramatic sunrise at first, just a gradual loosening of the dark, the horizon warming little by little as the sea held on to the last traces of night.Because it was summer, there was already a softness in the air.The coast is never truly quiet at that hour. It can seem still, but there is always movement somewhere: water shifting below, a faint breeze along the land, birds waking before the village has properly stirred. Out beyond sight, the gulls had already begun to call. STILLNESSWinter sunrise in Arniston.This was taken just after 07h00, looking out across the bay from the village side toward the sea near Kassiesbaai. There was almost no wind that morning. Only the occasional sound of a gentle wave below, and now and then a passing seagull cutting through the silence.The small marker out at sea is known locally as the Baken. It stands on Saxon Reef, also called Die Riff or Die Rift, warning boats of the jagged submerged reef that stretches out from this coast.I liked the quiet contradiction in that. The sea looked almost completely still, softened here by a 30 second exposure, yet the marker is there because this water also asks to be respected.That is part of what keeps drawing me back to Arniston. Its beauty is never only decorative. THE OBSERVERWhere dawn found the cave.By the time we reached Waenhuiskrans, the cave was still almost dark. The sea was close, but we heard it before we could properly see it. It moved somewhere beyond the opening, rolling over the rocks and sending its sound back into the cave in a deeper, softer way.That is how the morning began for me. Not with a clear view, but with sound, cold air and the feeling of standing inside a place that had not yet shown itself.There is something different about arriving at the coast before sunrise. The eye has to wait. The body understands things first. The rock underfoot. The dampness in the cave. The clean bite of salt air against your face. The taste of the sea on your lips. Outside, the day was beginning to form, but inside the cave the night still held on for a little longer.You move carefully at that hour. You check where you are standing. You listen to the water. You become aware of the tide, the wet rock, the uneven ground, and the simple fact that the sea has far more authority in a place like this than you do.I had gone there to photograph the coastal area at first light. That was the purpose of the early start and the careful timing. My colleague had taken me around that morning and was helping me with some of my equipment. At one point, while I was working, he moved towards the entrance of the cave. He was not posing. He was not thinking about the photograph. GOLDEN THREADOut where the day begins.Autumn mornings in Arniston arrive quietly. The light gathers first over the edge of the sea, soft and gold, before settling across the harbour, the slipway, the old walls, and the boats waiting in the cold. On this morning, while the village still felt half asleep, one fishing boat was already easing its way out towards the fishing grounds.There is something timeless about watching that happen here. It is not dramatic in the usual sense. It is about instinct, weather, distance, and the steady confidence of people who know this coast well. What stayed with me most was the light. A long golden path stretched behind the boat, catching the wake and making it look, for a moment, as though it was being carried forward on a thread of light. Stories in Glass: Windows of ArnistonWalk slowly enough through Kassiesbaai and the windows begin to tell their own story.These four photographs were made on winter mid morning walkabouts in and around Arniston. What held me was how different the windows were in colour, condition and construction, yet how clearly they belonged to the same world. Some reveal something of the room behind them. Some reveal almost nothing. Some are straight, some slightly skew, some cracked, some boarded, some still holding the quiet evidence of daily life.That is what interested me here. Windows reveal and protect at the same time. They let in light, but they also decide how much stays hidden.Taken together, these felt less like separate photographs and more like a small portrait of the village itself. Mrs H at first light in Arniston.Taken at 5:37am on a December morning, this boat stood quietly on the old harbour slipway as the first soft pink light moved across the village. What caught me was not only the colour, but the sense of place. In Arniston, boats like this are part of a deeper working rhythm tied to the harbour, the sea, and the fishing history of Waenhuiskrans.The slipway itself dates back to 1936, and the name Mrs H also carries local memory, linked to a widely reported 2015 loss at sea that affected more than a vessel alone. SUMMER LIGHTSummer Light in Arniston arrives quietly, as if the day has finally stopped insisting on being noticed. The hard glare of noon loosens, the sky turns pale and wide, and the sea settles into soft bands of turquoise and jade that look almost brushed into place. Beyond the breakers a small fishing boat holds its position, patient and steady, while closer to shore a lone swimmer stands waist deep in the shallows, facing the open horizon. PINK MOONA brief blush over wild shoresI nearly missed it.The sun had already gone and the beach was emptying when that narrow seam of colour began to gather along the horizon. Not the blaze of sunset — that had passed. This was softer. A pink champagne glow suspended between the fading warmth of the day and the cool blue of coming night.I walked past the harbour at Kassiesbaai and stood near the reef to the right, where the small beacon guides fishing boats home.
