ANGEL’S LANDING, my journey On July 17, 2021, I took the steps toward reaching the summit of what is considered one of the most dangerous hikes in the U.S. With the company of my best friend, we set out to hike Angels Landing in Zion National Park.

Once we reached the overcrowded Scouts Lookout, I quit. The fear I saw in other hikers’ faces, as well as the fear in my mind, accompanied anxiety and my fear of heights, had gotten the best of me. I stayed at Scouts Lookout as my buddy ventured on. He turned around without reaching the summit and we made the 2 mile trek back down the mountain.
Fast forward 3 years, 11 months, and 4 days, another opportunity presented itself. Since the first attempt, I have jumped out of a helicopter, jumped out of a plane, dangled from a cliff in Banff and pushed myself to experience uncomfortable situations. With an understanding of misogi, I was determined to tackle this crippling fear.
This time, I made sure to have better control to give myself the best chance of success. The alarm was set to sound at 4:45 am. However, the fear and anxiety howled all night. I woke up every hour. Eventually, I said fuck it and got out of bed at 4:15 am. I arrived at the bike store to grab my e-bike and made the journey to the trailhead. Surrounded by darkness, the fear/anxiety screamed in my mind. “You don’t need to do this. It isn’t worth it. NO one will know if you throw in the towel.” But what the fear did not take into account is that I would know. This journey was a competition against myself. No one else. I reached the grotto trailhead, parked the bike, locked it, and started my ascent. It’s 5:20 in the morning. There isn’t a soul around. I am completely alone.
The beginning of the trail is easy. Yes, the incline is real and steep. But there is nothing technical involved. My heart rate is increasing. Some due to the incline. Some to the elevation gained. The majority, fear. Its volume intensifies in my head. I push through.
As I reach Scouts Lookout, rays of sunshine begin to hit different peaks of the mountain. I see the chains. Let’s fucking go! #hiking #zion #zionnationalpark #utah #misogi #living taken in Angels Landing by @focus_snap_reflect
