An icon. A revolutionary. A legacy that still guides environmental movements.

We look back with deep gratitude at the roots of our organisation, and to the people who shaped it. At the heart of our story stands Julian, a tireless activist, and a fearless voice for social and environmental justice in Malta.

As we fondly look at what has been achieved in our 40 year history, we hope that we keep on honouring his legacy in every act of resistance and hope we carry forward today. 💚

Is Malta facing an Energy crisis? 🇲🇹🇪🇺 Last week our Climate Campaign Coordinator Dr Suzanne Maas spoke at a panel discussion at the University of Malta, organised by @jefmalta (Young European Federalists), alongside shadow minister Hon. Mark Anthony Sammut, CEO of the Energy and Water Agency Engineer Sandro Lauri, and Professor Roderick Pace from the Institute of European Studies (UM), moderated by JEF Academic Officer Nicole Vassallo.

The discussion touched upon rising energy prices, the promotion of renewable energy in Malta and the impact of global geo-political events on the energy market. The main two points brought in by Friends of the Earth Malta were:

⛽ Stop fossil fuel subsidies now! In light of the escalating climate crisis, we need to move away from fossil fuel use as soon as possible, and redesign subsidies to protect people from energy poverty and incentivise households and businesses to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy instead.

💡 Promote community energy in Malta. With young people being less and less likely to own a property, let alone one with their own roof space, we need to provide other options for people to participate in the renewable energy transition. Renewable energy cooperatives can offer a solution.

We thank JEF Malta for the opportunity, and the students and other panelists for the lively (dare we say, energetic) discussion! by @foe_malta

It’s been a joy to create the identity for this year’s edition of ĊineAmbjent, an environmental film festival organised by @foe_malta , which opens today 🎥
-
I started the process by researching the history of cinema in Malta: signage, posters, tickets, all of which inspired a hand drawn, eclectic typeface.

The festival is showing beautiful independent films in cinemas all over Malta (& Gozo), many of which also have panel discussions or q&a’s about Malta’s most pressing issues. I highly encourage anyone on the islands to go and support this event and join in the discussions!

Join us this Thursday at 18:00 for a screening of Earth's Greatest Enemy, a documentary exposing the devastating environmental impact of the US military. Stay after the screening for an informal discussion on the links between militarism, imperialism and the climate crisis.

🎟️ Tickets: €3 (feel free to contact the Friends of the Earth Malta page for a free ticket if cost is a barrier).

Earth's Greatest Enemy investigates the US military's enormous environmental footprint, from its dependence on fossil fuels to the pollution, toxic waste and ecological destruction it creates. The US military is one of the world's largest institutional consumers of fossil fuels, yet its contribution to the climate crisis is often overlooked. Military bases, weapons testing and armed conflicts also contaminate land and water, destroy ecosystems and leave communities dealing with the consequences for generations.

At a time when governments continue to increase military spending while failing to take meaningful action on the climate crisis, the documentary raises an important question: Can we achieve environmental and climate justice without confronting militarism and imperialism?
