Last week, we teamed up with @folarorg for a two-day conservation exchange! 📍 Day 1: Our Conservation Interns visited the L.A. River to test water quality and study local macroinvertebrates. 📍 Day 2: FOLAR’s River Fellows visited our Oak Woodland to collect native plant data—and caught a special gharial feeding at the LAIR! 🐊We are so proud to partner with FOLAR to build a sustainable world where people and wildlife thrive together. 🌎💚 by @folarorg

We're halfway through this year's River Fellows program, and it's already been a full few months.So far, our Fellows have gone kayaking on the LA River, spent nights camping together, joined FoLAR's Earth Day Habitat Restoration Day, hiked through Elysian Park, and spent two days at Lewis MacAdams Riverfront Park for a Family Day and a Source to Sea field trip, following the River from where it begins to where it meets the ocean.There's much more still to come.This program is another community access project through the California Natural Resources Agency to improve youth access to natural and cultural resources. We're grateful for every Fellow who's shown up this year, and for everyone who's helped them get to know this River a little better.Here's to the second half!#FriendsOfTheLARiver #LARiver #RiverFellows by @folarorg

An update on the East LA oil spill and what it means for the River and our community.Three companies have been cited for their roles in the spill: Camarillo Drilling, which performed the drilling operations, Arcadian Infracom, the project management company overseeing the fiber optic installation, and HP Communications, the contractor responsible for installing the lines. The pipeline itself is operated by Pacific Pipeline System.If you believe you’ve been affected, residents and business owners can file a claim with Pacific Pipeline System at (877) 817-5465.We’ll keep sharing what we know as this moves forward. 💚 by @folarorg

What a beautiful day in community practicing a little karma yoga by supporting Friends of the LA River’s habitat restoration efforts at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve.Together we learned about Southern California’s native riparian ecosystem and the many ways the Chumash and Tongva peoples have long lived in relationship with this land. Thank you to @la_audubon for leading us on such a cool little nature walk while sharing the history and ecology of this incredibly special place. The work was a bit dirty, sweaty, and prickly (ouch!), but deeply rewarding. Thank you to our wonderful little community of Karma Yoga practitioners who showed up with open hearts and willing hands. The oil spill in the LA River was worse than we were told.New estimates from LA County put the total at approximately 25,000 gallons of crude oil spilled on May 22, which is nearly ten times the 2,400 gallons initially reported. The oil reached storm drains and the LA River, killed wildlife and impacted our communities. Three companies have since been cited by air quality regulators after petroleum odors affected nearby residents, including students at Esteban Torres High School.We're grateful to the crews and first responders who have been on the ground working to clean up the spill and protect the surrounding community. We're also thankful for the local reporters and advocates who have continued to get information to the public throughout this process.FoLAR will continue to monitor this situation and advocate for the River and the communities along it long after this story leaves the headlines.. What happens to our streets and storm drains ends up in the River, and the River belongs to all of us.If you or your business were impacted, you may be eligible to file a claim with Pacific Pipeline System, the company that operates the ruptured pipeline. Call 1-877-817-5465 and leave your name and contact information. A representative will return your call. Claims may cover property damage, business interruption, cleanup costs, equipment or inventory damage, and other documented expenses directly tied to the spill. LA County's Department of Economic Opportunity is also available to help people and businesses navigate the claims process. by @folarorg

In case you missed it, the Bowtie Community Welcome Day marked a major milestone for Northeast LA: a 3.2-acre parcel of a former industrial railyard, remediated and on its way to becoming a thriving wetland and public park along the LA River in Glassell Park.Spearheaded by @ca_conserve, in partnership with @castateparks, the event celebrated the near completion of the Bowtie Wetland Demonstration. The speakers highlighted how the project’s progress was driven by key partnerships, public investment, and community engagement. But we must also confront the risk that new parks could lead to higher costs of living, threatening to displace the very people who fought for the parks in the first place.A resident from Northeast LA (NELA) put it plainly in the first Progress Report on the Taylor Yard Equity Strategy (TYES): “Now the land is going to be cleaned up; does that mean we can stay here?”That question sits at the heart of the Taylor Yard Equity Strategy (TYES).Together with @mrcaparks, @lacity, and a coalition of nonprofits and community organizations, TYES champions NELA’s vision for parks to prevent displacement, create local opportunities, honor the region’s diverse cultures, and uplift efforts to ensure that longtime residents and legacy businesses can remain rooted and thrive in place.On behalf of The Nature Conservancy, we’d like to extend our gratitude to the partners who made the event and project possible: Technical design by @stantecConstruction by El Capitan Environmental Services and managed by @geosyntecconsultants Native plants grown by @theseedschoolla and planted by @lacorps @clockshopla has been a key anchor for community members through programming. @anahuakyouthsports has been The Nature Conservancy’s close partner in engaging frontline Spanish-speaking community members.
