A massive thank you to the racers, volunteers, and sponsors who brought this to life and made it a truly unforgettable day out there.

Congratulations to everyone who showed up to run. It was a beast of a course with huge climbs and heavy descents and you all crushed it! See you next year!! 🏔️ [📸] - @mikesugianto taken in Folding Mountain by @foldingmountainultra

Helicopters, cowboy hats and a near-perfect weather window helped bring a new Alberta race to life 🙌

The first Folding Mountain Ultra kicked off on June 6 with nearly 300 runners, a start line beside a brewery and a course that sent racers deep into the terrain above Folding Mountain Landing near Hinton, Alta.

Race directors Sami Cherkaoui, Jaclyn Panylyk and Jason Griffiths said the inaugural event was the result of a long-held feeling that the area needed a race of its own. But like most first editions, there were unknowns–everything from the weather forecast to whether enough water would make it to the top of the mountain.

FMU PACE PLANNER

Your pace for 10km on road might be predictable but 10km on trail? Not so much. Elevation gain and loss, technical sections and stage of the race can all play big roles in how long it takes to get from aid station to aid station.

To provide runners a better idea of how long certain segments of the course might take, we took all of last years timing data and made a pace planner to help determine what the splits between legs might look like depending on how long you anticipate your race to be.

Whether you’re generally front, middle, or back of the pack, you can use this as a guide to help see how long you might spend on certain segments and prepare accordingly.

To use the pace planner:
- Find the pace planner page on our website
- Choose distance (60km or 25km)
- Toggle the amount of time you expect it will take you to complete the race
- Or choose one of the presets below the toggle

GREETINGS FROM THE NEVERENDING RIDGE OF NIGHTMARES

One of the most challenging sections of the 60km course also happens to be the most beautiful. After summiting Folding Mountain, runners head down a ridge that opens up to panoramic views of the Rockies for about 6km before hitting the turnaround point. The hills are rolling and the elevation is sneaky, but the perspectives of the mountains you get in each direction make it all worth it.

We heard a lot of comments about how unexpectedly challenging it was. One post from @harrapliam who called it “the never ending ridge of nightmares” stuck with us, and so the NIGHTMARES shirt seemed like a fitting tribute to all those who took it on.

SEE YOU ON THE RIDGE

SALUTE TO SCREE PATROL

Solo 60km and Leg 2 Relay racers pass through a scree section to get to and from the summit of Folding Mountain. It’s short, but steep, and can be the most intimidating section of the course.

Scree Patrol was there to help. They’re a team of volunteers who are experienced mountain runners and ropers who set up ropes and helped runners find their path along the scree. The toughest stretch is only about 50 meters, and the trail was well-travelled, but it still took confidence, sure footing, and sometimes a little encouragement to get across. Scree Patrol was there to watch their step and get them through it. Good job to all of the runners who took on the challenge.

THANK YOU SCREE PATROL. We look forward to having you back next year 🫡 taken in Folding Mountain by @foldingmountainultra
