A devastating week of fires.

Today I’m in Arlington visiting my friends at Smash Toast and Folklore Grove, a restaurant and independent bookstore collaboration devastated by a four alarm fire Monday evening.

More than 80 firefighters responded to the fire in the 2400 block of W. Abram Street. The roof ultimately collapsed and one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. The cause remains under investigation.

The fire also affected neighboring businesses within the plaza, including Beirut Grill, The Pilates Effect and Derma Spa Laser Clinic.

This was one of several significant fires across North Texas this week:

🔥 Trinity River, Dallas: I witnessed a grass fire along the river on August 17 as firefighters responded. I also witnessed an apparent electrical or power line incident nearby. The exact cause has not been confirmed.

🔥 Redbird, Dallas: A four alarm fire spread through grass, tires, trailers and vehicles, producing heavy black smoke.

🔥 Tarrant County: A residential fire on Los Rios Drive resulted in injuries and the death of a dog.

🔥 Oak Cliff: An apartment fire displaced 24 residents. A man was later arrested and charged with arson.

🔥 Chico: A grass fire threatened Chico Elementary School and prompted a temporary evacuation.

Extreme heat and dry vegetation can increase fire risk and the speed at which fires spread, but that does not mean heat caused each of these fires.

❤️ Ways to support the affected Arlington businesses can be found on their Instagram profiles, tagged below.

DISCLAIMER: Information is based on local reporting, public safety officials and firsthand observations where identified. Some investigations remain ongoing.

Folklore Grove holds so much of my heart, and it would feel wrong if I didn’t dedicate space to the other community that made me who I am and keeps me going. This shelf will be a permanent installation in the bookstore no matter where we go because it’s just SO important to me.

As usual, we are so incredibly thankful to all of you who we can call Folklore Family 💕 We love you 🐇 by @folklore.grove

Oh, how a year makes a difference.

One week since our lives were changed forever, and the grief is really starting to hit hard. Climbing through rubble and ash to stand in the middle of the wreckage felt unreal, all of our jokes and humor aside.

The fundraiser to help us try and recover from the losses is still up and in our bio.

Much love,
The Grove by @folklore.grove
