•MOUNTAIN WORSHIP•Weaving tales of elves and witches, of dragons and mountain trolls, of deep magic, creation and destruction, of life, death and rebirth. We are always striving to build within our children an animistic worldview. We teach our children that the land is sacred and that every tree, stone, body of water is a living entity in which we can communicate with. We show our children that we must hold reverence for the land spirits and we must show great care when traversing the land on foot or bicycle. We teach them to never take without asking and to always leave offerings of song, food or drink. This worldview is not new, it is something that universally all people once held before we lost touch with the deep magic of this earth. We are but a thread woven into the intricate tapestry that is life. We all share Wyrd, and I’m grateful for those near and far with whom I share this space. •“The mystery religions were instituted in order to protect the marvels of the commonplace from those who would devalue them.“-Peter Redgrove-•🚲⚡️🌲•#adventurecycling #animism #paganism #mountainmagic #folklore by @folklore.pedaler

••Mountain cleanse••What started as a simple spin up the road turned into a much longer adventure than anticipated. The mountains on this day were spectacular, wildflowers are in full force, mountain streams still flowing, birds were out and singing to us. I’ve always been drawn to the mountains, there is an inescapable mysticism about them. One cannot help but feel insignificant while among such ancient giants and this always makes me feel at ease. When you submerge yourself in nature you are reminded just how powerful she really is. Neither good nor evil. Just pure, raw power. The power to destroy you violently or the power to move you with such beauty you cannot help but drop to your knees and shed tears. We traversed fire roads stretching through vast amounts of burnt conifers with wildflowers and grass growing underneath. We observed the way the ancient glaciers shaped the formations of the marble mountains. We soaked up the sun, we cleansed ourselves in pure mountain waters, we sang to the birds and we gave offerings to the spirits of the land as to show our reverence and gratitude for the gifts the mountains give us. Not bad for a “quick spin”. All in all we climbed 2700 feet elevation over the course of the first 8 miles. Then came the fast descent home, which seemed to only last a few minutes compared to the climb. We are so blessed to call this place home. We belong here.•🚲⚡️🌲•#adventurecycling #mountaincycling #countryroads #mountainadventures #folklore by @folklore.pedaler

•BIODIVERSITY ERADICATION•It is hard to imagine that in 200 years California has lost 99% of its native grasslands to agriculture and development. 96% of the old growth redwood forests have been destroyed due to logging. 90% of our waterways are gone due to mismanagement. Wolves, Bears, Elk populations were nearly lost due to over hunting and habitat loss.Your electric cars and energy saving air conditioning, plastics recycling and electronic composting devices are doing nothing to help the planet. You continue to over consume greenwashed products so you can virtue signal and convince everyone around you that you live consciously. Consumption of products is never going to solve anything, and will only continue to misuse resources we are running out of. What can you do? Learn about the native flora and fauna in your area. Buy less stuff. Learn to repair things. Sabotage your local real estate developments. Refuse to bend a knee to the ever increasing techno-dystopian-hell scape the government is promoting. Protest the loss of public lands. Stop supporting systems that put economic growth over ecology. Teach children about these fragile eco-systems all around us. Remember, all politicians are parasites and will always sell our inheritance of the natural world for a few more dollars in their pockets. Despite the incredible loss we have faced, it’s not too late. Mankind can never fully conquer nature. Like the tale of Icarus, they will fly too close to the sun and feel the wrath of the gods. •🚲⚡️🌲•#ecology #biodiversity #animism #habitatloss #folklore by @folklore.pedaler

-ANIMISM IN THE MODERN WORLD-• Animists hold a world view that everything around us, trees, plants, animals, stones, rivers, land etc, have a spirit. We need more of this perspective in the modern world. Too many people go about their day to day lives without thinking about the repercussions of their actions, what they consume and how much damage they may be inflicting upon the natural world. We are trained by society from the time we are young that the natural world is separate from us and that it serves one purpose…. For us to exploit for entertainment or material gain. Of course, it is nearly impossible to live without causing some harm but we can start to understand the systems in which we are a part of and try our best to minimize that negative impact. The more you learn about the various plant and animal lives that surround you, the more you realize that the waters and mountains around us are also living beings, the more you can do your part in protecting this fragile web we have been woven into. Be careful of what you consume, what systems you support with your money, where you walk, how you talk and most importantly how you treat all life on this planet. Our actions are our only true belongings. Our actions are the ground upon which we stand.•🚲⚡️🌲•#adventurecycling #ecology #naturalist #animist #folklore by @folklore.pedaler

Jeeps and trucks scoff as they blast past us on our ride kicking up clouds of dust as if they are in a hurry to get nowhere. Their faces hold this sense of superiority or machismo complex. Somehow sitting in your overpriced 4x4 chugging beers is a lot tougher and manlier than actually using your own strength and energy to propel you and your baby though the woods. Beyond the yellow gate is where the magic begins.Feeling burnt out at this point, 96 degrees in the shaaadddeeeeSpeaking of burnt out. I always enjoy wandering though the burn areas, reflecting on life and death. The native grasses and wildflowers were stretching toward the light amongst the skeletons of the forest. The plants use their roots to absorb the nutrients of the dead and decomposing treesShade break. Baby fell asleep at this point. I drink a spindrift (sponsor me fool!) and ponder my decision to climb nearly 3k feet on a hot ass dayI have conflicting views on private property. On one hand, I don’t want to welcome any asshole to my property where they will tear up the land with their 4x4s, chug beers and leave trash. But then again, I feel that these particular signs only say “this is logging interest, stay out” so fuck them. I disregard these signs most of the time and besides, we have been welcomed by the spirits of the land as friends. Respect the land and you shall never be prohibited Reached the top, time for the 3 mile descent One last shot of this view before heading back. None of these shots are particularly impressive, I couldn’t get myself to slow down and focus long enough to take good photos, heat was melting my brain Visited my old deer friend. I can remember first coming across this carcass in winter, freshly killed with buzzards and crows fighting over the flesh. I come here every once in a while to admire the various stages of decomposition and to reflect on the inevitability of death itself. We all end up here. •MIDSUMMER PHOTO DUMP• The sun had reached it peak and the last two weeks it has began its slow descent toward darkness. I always hope to be intentional in observing these sacred times and slow down to celebrate. If I’m being honest, time has been getting away from me. June flew by before I knew it but some cool things happened. We held our first skate-night of the year for our skatepark project, Scored some mustache bars and some quill stem moose bars for two of my projects bikes, rode a lot more than ever this past month (no strava stats just trust me bro) went to the county fair only to have my cynical view of things take over and force me to see it for what it is……. Hyper consumption of deep fried sugar and cheaply made over priced toys. This is what 250 years of freedumb looks like. Grateful for the experiences I share with my family and thankful for those of you who keep encouraging me to continue posting bike content from my little corner of the world. Go ride your bike, hug your friends and family and try to stay cool in this excessive heat.•🚲⚡️🌲•#rideyourbicycle #getoutside #midsummer #summervibes #folklore by @folklore.pedaler

•RADICAL INCENTIVE•The benefits of riding a bike is numerous. It’s something that I wish I had access to as a youth. While I had some crappy bikes to ride growing up, what I didn’t have was adults around me showing me that bikes can be used as a serious tool for transport. Whenever I tell people how much my six and ten year old ride they gasp, almost as if I’m a horrible parent for subjecting them to such strenuous and dangerous activities. They frown with disapproval as I tell them my six year old is able to ride safely on our rural highway. This is the mentality that is so damaging to the confidence of kids. While I understand that there are real dangers to riding in close proximity to vehicles, I always argue that being in a motor vehicle is just as, if not far more dangerous than riding a bike on a road. The fact of the matter is, fear is not the same as awareness. We can teach them to navigate life in a safe manner without instilling fear into them. Growing up skateboarding, we would often hear “that’s so dangerous!” From people who likely never lived up to their full potential. We want to raise strong, confident daughters. We want them to be able to navigate risk and assess danger in every situation in life without fear clouding their judgement. Just because there are rattle snakes and bears in our woodlands, doesn’t prevent us from going into the forests around us. Just because some people die in car wrecks doesn’t prevent us from driving. So, ride the fuck out of your bike and if you have children around you please help them build confidence and safe practices instead of spreading fear of riding. Bikes are sick as fuck. Kids deserve this freedom•🚲⚡️🌲 by @folklore.pedaler
