***OUT TODAY!***

It was an honour to be asked to write the introduction for this beautiful new hardback volume - with gilded edges, no less - of Welsh Folk & Fairy Tales by @flametreepublishing as part of their Collector’s Editions series.

Pick up a copy and come face to face with lake-dwelling monsters, faithful hounds, wailing ghouls and cunning devils, witches, fairies, conjurers, and tales deeply rooted in medieval myths.

🌟📚 Today's the day! 📚🌟

From a chance encounter over Caernarfonshire sleep paralysis lore with Mark Norman back in October 2021 to this:

An *actual book* about two of my favourite subjects in the world (in no particular order): Wales and ghost-lore! 👻

🌟📚 Out TODAY! 📚🌟

Huge thanks to everyone who has been there for advice, translations, and strong coffee over the past few months.

And special thanks to all the staff working for @calonbooks for being the most supportive bunch imaginable, and for putting so much faith in a first-time writer 🖤

***********************************

🌟📚 Bellach yn awdur cyhoeddiedig, bois bach! 📚🌟

Nôd y llyfr oedd dodi llên gwerin ysbrydion Cymreig ar blatfform haeddiannol gan brofi ei fod wedi datblygu a goroesi ar wahân, yn annibynol o'r profiad "Prydeinig".

Dwi wir yn gobeithio fy mod wedi g'neud cyfiawnder â'r pwnc.

Mae'r testunau gwreiddiol Cymraeg, heb eu altro, i gyd i'w canfod o fewn 'The Folklore of Wales: Ghosts', ochr-yn-ochr â'r cyfieithiadau Saesneg ac yn barod i chi eu dehongli eich hunain!

Wir yn edrych 'mlaen i glywed eich theorïau... 👻 by @folklorewales

Wastad yn bleser cael fy nghyfweld gan @cylchgrawngolwg, y tro hwn am yr ymgyrch wirioneddol wych i droi hen gronfa ddŵr Fictorianaidd Llandudno yn arddangosfa ymdrochol am lên gwerin Cymru. Cefais y fraint o gyflwyno hanes fy hoff anghenfil, a’r cyntaf i gael ei arddangos, i gynulleidfa’r dderbyniad cwpwl o wythnosau’n ôl: yr Afanc.

Edrych ymlaen yn fawr i weld y prosiect yma’n mynd o nerth i nerth.

Always a pleasure talking to @golwg360, this time about the brilliant new proposal to develop the Llandudno Vaults into a Welsh folklore tourist attraction (you heard), and the talk I gave at its stakeholders meeting a couple of weeks back regarding the provenance of my favourite misunderstood Welsh monster and the subject of the first exhibit: the Afanc.

Also features some gushing over the collective genius of the creative team involved in bringing the Afanc to life and a hot take on the Welsh tourist industry.

Tomorrow afternoon I’ll be dropping more hot takes on how Welsh ghosts have been historically misunderstood over on @bbcradiocymru. Boo. by @folklorewales

Eisteddfod fwyn, llychlyd a thesog flwyddyn yma yn Llantwd, yn gweld hen ffrindiau (a chael gwneud ambell i un newydd) ymysg cybolfa o greadigrwydd a chelfyddyd cywrain.

Llongyfarchiada enfawr i fy chwaer Luned am ennill cystadleuaeth @lswalescddcymru @colegcymraeg, ac i’r bychan am ddysgu marchogaeth cyn ei ddyflwydd. Braf iawn hefyd oedd gweld @russwilliams.welshauthor yn serennu yn @wstonescarm gyfagos (ynghŷd a fy hoff waith celf erioed, o bosib, yn @oriel_myrddin).

Wedi trepsio dros Sir Gâr, Penfro a Cheredigion am wythnos, roedd medru dod yn ein holau i Fryn Eglur eto yn donic, a chael munud o lonydd ymysg y criciaid lond y caeau. by @folklorewales

Mae’n anodd iawn credu ar ôl pedair mlynedd hirfaith fy mod, o’r diwedd, wedi cwblhau gradd MA mewn Astudiaethau Cymreig a Cheltaidd @ysgolygymraegpc.

Roedd hi’n bleser enbyd cael graddio fis diwethaf, yn dathlu ochr yn ochr â’r staff, gan dderbyn gwobr Sioned Davies am fy nhraethawd hir…

… a hwnnw, wrth reswm, am fwganod Cymru.

🎓🎓🎓

After four (very) long years, I’ve finally completed my MA in Welsh and Celtic Studies @prifysgolcdydd!

Back when I started in 2022, I was living in Pontypridd and divvying my time between working as a Consultant Paediatric Pathologist in Bristol and writing my first book, with no preconceived notion of where that might lead.

Our lives were turned upside down in 2024 in the face of a myriad seismic upheavals, and so I was so incredibly grateful and proud, not only to have actually completed the degree, but to have been able to graduate last month. The icing on the cake was being awarded the Sioned Davies prize for my dissertation…

… on Welsh ghosts, naturally. by @folklorewales

A rare pause from the folklore for a second.

Let’s talk about John.

John Ystumllyn was enslaved when he was eight years old, brought to Eifionydd by the Wynn family from the West Indies, most likely, to the Ystumllyn estate in Cricieth. His biography is inherently complex, but despite the horrors of his upbringing and the racial aggression perpetuated against him even after his eventual emancipation from the Wynn family, John grew to be a very well regarded, successful and skilled individual who turned his deft hand to horticulture (among many other talents), marrying Margaret Gruffydd of Hendre Mur and raising a family here. His headstone at Ynyscynhaearn bears an englyn by local poet, Dafydd Siôn Siâms - a testament to the respect offered to him within his wider community.

His birth name, immaterial to his captors, remains unknown.

The only existing likeness of John, painted when he was 16 in 1754, is currently in the process of being “rescued” by the Garden Museum, London (where it has been on loan for the past three years), their success hinging on whether they can raise £420,000 in public donations to buy the painting from private ownership.

Aside from the deeply uncomfortable optics surrounding the sale of antiquities linked to the slave trade (and the repeated usage of terms like “rescue” and “save” in this context), their bid for the painting raises some important questions about where culturally priceless historic Welsh artefacts such as these should be homed.

The museum would wish for John’s painting - the “earliest portrait of a Black gardener in British history” - to hang next to Harold Gilman’s ‘Portrait of a Black Gardener’ (1905), which the museum purchased in 2013, to inspire the younger generations of Lambeth and wider London, “saving this rare record of Black British gardening history for the nation.”

But whose nation, exactly?

A very busy couple of days in the wonderful world of Welsh folklore…

A quick trip to London to catch up over the proofs of my new book with the most wonderfully supportive team @thamesandhudson (will hopefully be able to share details along with the gorgeous cover before too long!), before nipping over to @britishlibrary to cast an eye over the earliest known copy of Rev. Edmund Jones’s ghost accounts for my latest project.

You can also catch me discussing my research with Martin from @threeravenspodcast as part of their newest series delving into the folklore of the historic Welsh counties, where we chat all things ghosts, language, culture, and my favourite misunderstood monster… 🦫 by @folklorewales
