I couldn’t be happier my baby sister is getting married.

As a big brother, you always worry about who she’ll end up with. I had a few simple rules: don’t be soft, protect my nephews, and be able to take a joke. Somehow, she found a man who checks every box.

My father loved him. I love him. And most importantly, my nephews love him.

Twenty-two years ago this week, I was coming back from the desert to a surprise waiting at home. My mind was racing the entire way. I remember being on edge, flinching at bright lights, loud sounds and slamming doors. I hide this terrified feeling from everyone around me for weeks. I lost a patch of hair on my head and used to combover to cover it.

There were crowds of people who didn’t understand why we had been there. Some judged. Some protested. Some looked at us like we had chosen the war ourselves. The truth is, most of us didn’t fully understand it either. But that didn’t matter. We had orders. We had a job to do. And we did it.

Over there, service members spent months sometimes years listening for mortars, scanning rooftops, watching for anything that didn’t feel right. They learn to live in a constant state of alert. They learn to survive.

But I learned something else too.

No matter how long it lasted, I knew I would eventually come home. We had a return date. A flight. A family waiting.

So many of the locals didn’t.

They lived that fear every single day of their lives with no rotation, no safe zone, no coming home from it. War wasn’t a deployment for them. It was their normal. I was thanked and showed appreciation from hundreds of locals nationals.

And that perspective has never left me. by @fonzforreal
