a really solid lunchtime bowl of tori paitan at @toriei.sg. it kinda makes sense since they are a dinner-only yakitori restaurant. rich, creamy chicken soup paired with medium-thick, firm noodles, bamboo shoots and a slice of chicken and pork chashu. I liked that the chicken was really bouncy yet had a firm bite. if the soup gets a little too rich, you can add a sprinkle of chili powder to balance the taste.
don’t miss out on the chashu bowl either - diced chashu dipped in a sweet-savoury glaze and torched over charcoal, paired with a soft boiled egg. break the yolk and dip the charred bits of chashu in it - wonderful!
you’ll likely need to make a reservation to dine at lunch but turnover was fairly prompt. there was even a diner using her laptop doing work while trying to eat at the same time - my grandparents would have given me death stares if i did that. go try this place out - you won’t regret!

this bowl of mapo tofu at @fatbird.sg starts out as soy milk, which sets into the silkiest tofu after 5 minutes in the claypot. the mapo sauce atop is savoury, slightly numbing and perfect with a bowl of white rice. i would have liked if there was more meat but since this is a chicken restaurant, you can probably pair the tofu dish with a chicken hotpot! serving size-wise, though, the mapo tofu can probably feed three to four people as a side dish.
half the fun of this dish is seeing the tofu set in solid form but the food is very decent as well. worth a try!

spicy raw crab soba at @dutumsg. it takes a while to squeeze all the meat out of the crab onto the pile of soba because you need to get into all the legs to dig out the meat. each bite of crab and noodles is nutty, spicy, and a little briny - I would say that the flavour of the chili and sesame oil mutes the flavour of the crab somewhat. but this was a pretty interesting dish that I’m glad i tried. it’s probably better to share this with someone as the flavour of the noodles can get a little jelak after a while.
on a side note, this place has a great banchan selection. I really liked the kimchi, fishcakes and macaroni salad. plus they are very prompt with refills. if you are not careful, you could probably fill up on banchan before the mains even arrive.

solid tsukemen at @momoya.sg. thick, curly noodles dipped in a rich, thick tonkotsu broth enriched with a generous spoonful of fish powder which added smokiness and an additional layer of salinity. the toppings were fairly standard - slices of chashu, bamboo shoots, an ajitama and slices of seaweed. at lunch, you can have it in a set with a salad and green tea for $23+. but do come back in the evenings where the shop turns into an izakaya with the cutest porcelain bowls!

pasta and pizza at @noci.pastabar. I loved the tagliolini which was thin and firm with a good bite - the truffled white ragu was savoury and fragrant. I also really liked the pizza, especially with the crown of parmesan on the crust. the pizza is slightly on the denser side and I found it really filling. burrata and mortadella is always a good topping combination. will definitely return!

really yummy ramen at @komachisg_official. the soup is a tonkotsu chicken shoyu - rich and creamy with just a hint of sweetness. you can see the huge square container of chicken soil that the chef has prepared - just imagine the chicken flavour in there! you can also choose your oil level and the intensity of flavour - for an authentic experience they recommend a ‘strong’ taste.
I liked the medium thick, curly noodles and the soft, tender chashu. when I return I will probably skip the egg and get more chashu instead. but overall this bowl is a winner! come for an early lunch and go back to the office for a nap after.

open-faced bagels at @kalikalibagels. they specialize in bagels with a butter crust, which presumably is something like the crusty base of a shio pan. for toppings, I chose smoked salmon, avocado and capers for half, and pastrami with caramelized onion cream cheese and gherkins for the other half.
one thing i appreciate at this shop is how they don’t upcharge if you decide to mix flavours for their open-faced bagel. you just pay the price of the more expensive option. and for $15 for the salmon and avocado option, i think this was quite fairly priced. especially since they were extremely generous with the toppings.
I quite enjoyed the taste of the bagel itself. you can really appreciate the crunch at the base contrasting with the chewy, slightly sweet dough that gets sweeter as you munch on it. I also liked the caramelized onion cream cheese that was part-savoury, part-sweet with a lingering finish. the salmon and avocado was good too - but I found myself enjoying the taste of the bagel more.
when I come back I will probably get a bagel and pair it with one of their other cream cheeses. excited!

tasty pasta at @freakynoody. they serve a tight selection of 4 different pastas - pictured here is the rose carbonara with duck breast and alfredo with grilled chicken. there is also a bolognese and an agio olio if i remember.
the rose carbonara and alfredo were both creamy and rich, but the spicy kick of the gochujang in the rose sauce made it less jelak. it’s obviously not a purist carbonara so don’t expect that haha. the alfredo was really, really cheesy - i guess if you like cheese you will like it. there was quite a good amount of protein with each pasta dish - can’t complain!
if you go in a pair (or you are really hungry), they do a buddy set with two pastas and two iced teas for about $27 after taxes and service charge. pretty worth it if you ask me. i would go back again!

would you pay $4 for an egg tart? the version at @mimmosingapore has smooth egg custard (a little light in flavour) and a sweet, slightly sour glaze on top. I think it is passionfruit flavoured. I liked the crispy pastry as well. $4 is a bit pricey but this one is tasty.

jostling with the crowd during opening week at @hone.bakes. I didn’t manage to try their offerings in their home baker phase but it is nice to sit down to slowly enjoy a leisurely breakfast (while sweating profusely and inhaling hazy fumes, thanks singapore)
the matcha black sesame gateau was a lovely treat of matcha gateau, black sesame cake and whipped cream, crunchy cookies and even some mochi hidden within. it is unabashedly sweet but the bitter notes of matcha and gritty, nutty black sesame notes are carried well. interestingly, the whipped cream on top had the strongest sesame flavour.
the mentaiko shio pan and jalapeño cheese bagel were both good. when you toast freshly baked bread, it will definitely be fragrant and yummy. and when you add butter/cheese/mentaiko… only a lactose intolerant person will complain. imo, you can probably get a more buttery (butterier?) and crusty shio pan at some other specialist shio pan outlets. I liked that the bagel wasn’t too dense, though. I think korean-style bagels tend to be more fluffy.
the gateau was $11 while the bakes range from $4 to $6. they also have a range of interesting drinks as well. I think it’s hard to compete on the coffee front because double shot, abseil and kahve are just adjacent. But I’d come back again to try their sweet offerings. maybe after a long run one day.

this is the hero from @wheatheadbaking. Shaved ham, fennel salami, scamorza, shrettuce, tomatoes, spicy fennel salad, pesto and confit garlic aioli. it was spicy, meaty, crunchy and just a little creamy. if you let it sit for a while, the oils from the meat get to mix with the salad and soak into the bread, making for a really tasty sandwich.

the fennel sausage pie from @wheatheadbaking is an absolute unit. it is stuffed to the brim with meaty homemade sausage with a herby, licorice-like aftertaste thanks to the fennel. paired with their in-house tomato chili jam, this is easily enough for a light lunch.
the banana cream pie is, as always, the stuff of dreams. light, sweet, creamy and with a slight boozy kick (i think there was some bourbon in the banana). i could, but shouldn’t, eat a whole pie.
