Just what makes a perfect Sunday Roast? @jimfamished sets out to better understand why this national institution of a meal (with all the trimmings and lashings of gravy) continues to thrive.

Jimi talks about the role of nostalgia with Sam Gregory, the landlord of @thebanktavern in Bristol where a year’s worth of Sunday Roast reservations got snapped up in just 11 minutes this year. Chef Sally Abe @littlechefsally explains why she has just added the Sunday Roast to the menu at her London restaurant Teal while food historian @dranniegray talks about the dish’s origins. Grant Fitzner from the @officefornationalistatistics prices up how the cost of a home-cooked roast dinner has changed in recent years.

Jimi visits the self-styled ‘Home of the Roast’, the @tobycarvery and learns about “The Deck” and just how much can be squeezed on to a single plate. He also catches up with a couple of podcasting Roast Detectives, @emerthescreamer and @esthertwonames to learn some of their own carvery vocab. Another slice of the “active joint” anyone?

He asked; I said yes. A Toad in the Hole is a big favourite in this house and works really well for a quick Sunday dinner, even quicker if you have onion gravy in the freezer to speed it up. This is so exciting! I’ve been looking forward to this new award from @theyorkshirepost for ages and it’s finally here in today’s Saturday magazine.

I’m honestly a bit giddy that I can now share it with you.

Our small band of just five independent restaurant critics each nominated our favourite restaurants we had visited in 2025. From the 52 restaurants between us, a shortlist of 20 has been announced today.

What makes this especially thrilling is that it’s a truly independent process — and every restaurant on that list should be hugely proud to be there.

My nominations were @forgemiddletonlodge (which has taken the crown as Restaurant of the Year), @olddeaneryripon, @pignutrestaurant, @legacygrandyork, and @thealicehawthorn

Here’s my mother in law, the Blenkinsop matriarch (in pink), an amazing woman who battled with Alzheimer’s and other challenges in recent years. Here she is with a large part of her brood sorry Josh and Emily, Aaron and Kieran, Liv and Laura aren’t in this pic.

She lived with great sadness after her beloved Ron snr. passed away in 2017 and other family events.

Today she gave up her fight. We were so blessed to be with her just before she gave in.

I thank her truly and forever for being in my life and being responsible for giving me the greatest gift of my life , her son.
