BBC Food and Farming Awards 2026! ✨

10 years of Meet the Farmers and 1 year of the Big Debate - last night was a brilliant opportunity to celebrate with the team!

To be nominated in the digital creator category alongside @foodgillysmith and @jadesbites was a huge honour - and congratulations Jade on your win!

It was an incredible evening in a stunning venue in Belfast and a proper celebration of all-things food and farming.

Thank you to Stephen from our headline sponsor @virginmoney for also joining us! Here’s to lots more Meet the Farmers to come.

Thank you to the BBC and @bbcfoodprog for organising a brilliant event.

Northern Ireland - we’ll be back!

If you ever Google “Wendell Berry quotes” (as someone who is sometimes devoid of inspiration but still looking for clever things to say about food is wont to do) you’ll come across this one:

“Eating with the fullest pleasure – pleasure, that is, that does not depend on ignorance – is perhaps the profoundest enactment of our connection with the world.”

You’ll also find quite a few people offering an immediate improvement if you’re planning to use the quote on social media – just omit the middle bit. After all, it’s a bit of a downer. Not the sort of qualification the algorithm likes.

We’ve managed to become quite keen on a hip and cool version of modern agrarianism while also being careful not to let our party be pooped by admitting that – when it comes to the food system – we’ve got ourselves into a pickle.

With that in mind, I just wanted to share some deep gratitude and admiration for someone who isn’t afraid to speak the truth and to do something about it by turning existential dread into hopeful and delicious pasta.

Andrew and the Fresh Flour Company will tomorrow attend the BBC Food and Farming Awards as nominees for best producer. On The Food Programme recently, he talked about the singing of the mill stones, but in my experience, when you visit the mill you’re more likely to hear thumping music from the big speaker rigged up above grain bags, the pleasing clanking of a mill Andrew’s nursed back to life after someone else gave up on it, or him giving himself some honest feedback on the latest recipe experiment or complaining about people who can’t cook pasta properly.

Andrew has been supplying flour, pasta, crackers and other amazing things to our supper clubs since we started. In my mind, no one embodies what Rootle is about more than him. He is a true artisan who cares about good craft, good people, kindness and fairness. He’s someone who shows that genuinely giving a shit is bloody cool. If there were more Andrews, the world would be a better place.

Whatever the outcome of the awards, there’s no one more deserving of one than Andrew and the team at the Fresh Flour Company. Support their righteous mission by eating some great pasta!

🌍 Mae dyfodol ein bwyd yn dibynnu ar ddyfodol ein planed.

Rydyn ni ym Size of Wales I Maint Cymru yn falch o fod ymhlith dros 180 o sefydliadau ac arbenigwyr sydd wedi llofnodi llythyr agored, wedi’i gydlynu gan Foodrise, yn galw ar Lywodraeth y DU i roi diogelwch bwyd wrth galon ei blaenoriaethau.

Mae newid hinsawdd, colli bioamrywiaeth a datgoedwigo yn bygwth y systemau sy’n cynhyrchu’r bwyd rydyn ni’n dibynnu arno bob dydd.

Yng Nghymru, mae ein dewisiadau bwyd yn cael effaith ymhell y tu hwnt i’n ffiniau. Dyna pam rydyn ni’n gweithio gydag ysgolion, cymunedau a sefydliadau i hyrwyddo bwyd cynaliadwy nad yw’n cyfrannu at ddatgoedwigo.

🌱 Mae diogelu coedwigoedd trofannol a sicrhau system fwyd gynaliadwy a chydnerth yn mynd law yn llaw.

🌍 The future of our food depends on the future of our planet.

@size_of_wales is proud to stand alongside more than 180 organisations and experts who have signed an open letter, coordinated by @wearefoodrise , calling on the UK Government to make food security a national priority.

Climate change, biodiversity loss and #deforestation are threatening the systems that produce the food we rely on every day.

Here in Wales, our food choices have consequences far beyond our borders. That’s why we’re working with schools, communities and organisations to promote sustainable, deforestation free food.

🌱 Protecting tropical forests and building a sustainable, resilient food system go hand in hand.

Beef or chicken for Sunday lunch? Which roast now costs much more? 🐔🐮

Earlier today, ONS Chief Economist, Grant Fitzner was part of the conversation on Radio 4's The Food Programme, talking about inflation and the changing cost of a roast dinner.
