Our First Short in the making: Masked Memories

POSTS STORIES REELS

Seven months ago, we released Settle4Tonight. This month, we got to watch it on the big screen at the Simi Music Video Fest.

This was the first project Fools Story Studios saw all the way through production, post, and release. In a lot of ways, it was the project that gave us the momentum to keep building.

Getting nominated was exciting. Getting to actually be there, see the film screened, celebrate the people who helped make it, meet other creatives, and experience the festival together meant even more.

A huge thank you to everyone who was part of Settle4Tonight and helped get it to this point — from the people behind the camera, to post, to the performers who trusted us with the work.

And thank you to the Simi Music Video Fest team for creating such a welcoming space for independent filmmakers and artists.

We met so many people throughout the weekend and are excited to keep following the work being made around us.

A film about friendship was carried by the actors who held its grief, humor, and heart.

For this spotlight, we’re highlighting the cast of Masked Memories. The people who brought Kai, Violet, and the world around them to life.

This story asks its characters to sit with what is unspoken: the jokes that cover pain, the silence between friends, and the moments where support means staying close enough to notice.

Through every scene, our actors helped shape the emotional heartbeat of the film and reminded us that grief is not only something we feel alone. Sometimes, it is revealed through the people who care enough to stay.

For this spotlight, we’re highlighting members of the Image Team. All the people who helped build the visual language of Masked Memories through camera, lighting, grip, BTS documentation, and on-set visual support.

From the frame to the light, from the movement of the camera to the moments captured between takes, this team helped shape how the story would be felt before a single word was spoken.

Masked Memories is a story about grief, friendship, and the memories we carry quietly. The Image Team helped give that story its atmosphere, texture, and visual rhythm.

For this spotlight, we’re highlighting members of the Production Team. The people helping keep Masked Memories moving through logistics, communication, set support, problem-solving, and care.

We weren’t just making a short. We were learning how to hold the story carefully.

As Masked Memories moved from script to set, every person brought something different to the film - patience, care, problem-solving, trust, and a willingness to sit with the emotional weight of the story.

When we asked our crew what this project meant to them, they shared:

“This project allowed me to not only work with a friend but to also tell this story of what grief can look like and the importance of being there for you the people you care about in their time of need. I truly felt I was part a story bigger than myself..”
— @jalen.fish2 / Sam

“Masked Memories honestly felt like a family. The way we all were able to come together, think on the move, take action and heart no matter what. It’s a rare thing that doesn’t come around all the time. I’m grateful to have been a part of it.”
— @a_duel / Grip

“This project meant a lot to me because it taught me what the real priorities are in life. Specifically, the incredible benefits of what prioritizing friends and family truly does for you.”
— @connorfrandzel / Script Writer

This film is about grief, friendship, and the memories people carry quietly. But behind the camera, it was also about people choosing to care for the story together.

The film is about grief, but the set was built on care.

After spending June introducing the heart of Masked Memories, July is about the people, choices, and process behind the film.

Every setup, slate, monitor, and quiet moment on set carried part of the story. This was not just about making a short film. It was about learning how to hold the story carefully.

Follow along as we move through the process behind Masked Memories.

Before we move behind the scenes, one more look at the world around Kai.

Masked Memories is a story about grief, but it is also a story about friendship and the people who know your usual order, your bad jokes, your routines, and still may not know what you are carrying.

June was about introducing the heart of the film: the memories we hide, the grief we carry quietly, and the people who notice when the mask starts to slip.

In July, we’ll show the process behind bringing that story to life.

Some memories ask to be faced.

Masked Memories is a coming-of-age story about the grief we inherit, hide, and finally begin to name.

Sometimes love looks like staying close enough to notice.

In Masked Memories, Kai and Violet’s friendship carries the quiet weight of the story.

When grief becomes hard to name, support does not always arrive as the perfect words. Sometimes it is sitting beside someone. Walking with them. Checking again when “I’m fine” does not feel true.

At its heart, this film is about the people who stay close when the mask starts to slip.
