FOOTY CUTS — CUT FILES #02

DUSTIN MARTIN

THE EARLY MOHAWK
Dusty’s early Richmond days featured a spiked mohawk with closely shaved sides and longer hair running down the back. A bold, rebellious look that quickly became one of his most recognisable early hairstyles.

THE SPIKED MULLET
The mohawk evolved into a more pronounced mullet, with textured spikes through the top and extra length at the back. The sides remained tightly clipped, creating a sharp contrast between the different lengths.

THE MODIFIED MOHAWK
Dusty kept the signature mohawk shape but began tightening things up. The longer strip through the centre became shorter and more uniform, while the shaved sides maintained that distinctive silhouette.

THE BUZZ CUT TRANSITION
Eventually, the longer back disappeared as Dusty moved towards a much shorter style. Closely shaved sides and a cropped top replaced the dramatic mohawk, giving him a cleaner, more understated appearance.

THE SHORT FADE
A complete departure from the early mohawk days. Dusty adopted a short, textured crop with faded sides and minimal length through the back. A sharper, more conventional cut compared to his earlier hairstyles.

THE CUT FILE
Player: Dustin Martin
Club: Richmond Tigers
Styles: Spiked mohawk, mullet, buzz cut, short fade
Hair colour: Dark brown
Trademark: Shaved sides and a spiked strip of hair through the centre.

THE VERDICT
From spiked mohawks to closely cropped fades, Dustin Martin’s early Richmond years featured some of the AFL’s boldest haircuts. His signature mohawk became part of his identity before eventually giving way to a cleaner, shorter look.
His hairstyle eventually became so recognisable that fans began copying it, with the look becoming part of his football legacy (even I remember having a Dusty cut at school). by @footycutsau

BAILEY SMITH — CUT FILES #01

THE SIGNATURE MULLET
The look that became synonymous with Baz. Shorter through the sides and front, with long blonde length through the back. By 2024, the ABC had Smith among the AFL’s 10 longest mullets.

KEEPING IT FRESH
This wasn’t just a mullet left to grow wild. Smith has had a longstanding connection with Melbourne barber brand Kings Domain, with the cut regularly shaped and maintained. In 2022, celebrity barber Joey Scandizzo gave the famous mullet a highly publicised trim at a Kings Domain event.

THE SHORTER PHASE
The front and sides were eventually taken considerably shorter, creating more contrast with the remaining length at the back. Still unmistakably a mullet — just tighter, sharper and more modern.

THE GROW-OUT
From there, Baz let it go again. The sides started filling out, the back got longer and the structured mullet gradually became a much looser hairstyle.

THE GEELONG ERA
The move to Geelong brought another evolution. What started as a traditional mullet has effectively grown into long blonde locks, with far less distinction between the sides and back. The mullet DNA is still there, but it’s now closer to shoulder-length hair.
