Panaeoulus antillarum VS Panaeoulus cyanescens

This big beauty is a Panaeoulus antillarum which is in the same genus and genetically almost identical to our favourite day trippers, Blue Minis or Panaeoulus cyanescens (slide 2)

Under closer inspection we discovered it’s not a Blue Mini due to the stem not bruising blue caused by the psychoactive psilocybin

Still cute tho ✨ taken in Cambodia by @foragefantasy

Fairy Ring Champignon / Scotch Bonnet ~ Marasmius oreades

Typically found in short grass in UK from April-November, found this fairy ring on a golf course.

Edible, and delicious. But they do have a deadly lookalike so forage carefully.

Folklore believes they are the doings of fairies and elves dancing in a circle and that if a human joined in they would be made to dance until they died of exhaustion

Crystal Brain Fungus / Exidia nucleata

A jelly fungus quite frequent in the North of England. I’ve seen small ones of these and knew it had to be some kind of fungi. This was a big one…The wild storms we’re having here means one thing; fallen trees with fungi normally out of reach to find 🕵🏻‍♀️ taken in Manchester, United Kingdom by @foragefantasy

Would you believe me if I told you that the largest organism on Earth is a fungus?

The mushrooms we see are only the fruiting bodies of the webs of mycelium that lie under the soil, which you can see here as the white silk-like material entangled in the leaves, holding them all together. Mycelial networks are intertwined with the surrounding plant and tree roots, and transmit information within the fungi and from fungi to the plants & trees of the forest.

Mycelium transmits nutrients through these networks to the roots of the plants and trees that are entangled with it. Some plants (like Orchids) don’t even need roots as they depend entirely on the mycelium network to receive all the nutrients they need 🦦 Recent research has shown trees in the forest can communicate via electric signals passed through the mycelial network and Mother trees even recognise their own kin and favour them to receive more nutrients

Whole forests depend on mycelium to exist, yet the research into understanding the complex relationship between them is so little. Mycelium is key to the growth of healthy plants, crops and ecosystems and the fact that this is overlooked and not even being researched in a time when our forests are disappearing in front of our eyes is a reflection of the ignorant capitalist system that controls the science world too…

Discovered a variety of new beauties on my forages this week that I have wanted to find for a while;

1. Glistening Inkcap / Coprinus micaceus
Edible, however, with little nutritional value. But bloody beautiful with a glorious glisten to em.

2. Wild Grey Oyster Mushrooms / Pleurotus ostreatus
Woooooo! A massive bounty of grey oysters, excited to find them in the wild after growing them in my cultivation kitchen. Breakfast for the weekend sorted

3. Witches Butter or Yellow Brain / Tremella mesenterica
Found on a natural crucifix with a small sluggish inhabitant

4. Purple Jelly Disc / Ascocoryne sarcoides
I’ve renamed this to mince meat mushroom

5. Velvet Shanks / Enokitake / Flammulina velutipes
Happy to finally add these to my finds, another one of the most popularly foraged mushroom in the UK and largely cultivated in Japan where they’re known as Enoki. You’ve definitely ate these babies in all types of cuisine, especially ramen. But the wild ones look so different to the skinny white ones that are cultivated you would never know they are genetically the exact same and can be found in your back garden 🤫 look out for their black stems and orange gills, not to be confused with the deadly lookalike; Funeral Bells.
