A Lady of the Autumn Harvest

Autumn weaves her golden spell across the garden this month. A celebration of the season, with treasures gathered from the kitchen garden and lovingly brought together into a display.

Pumpkins, squashes and gourds nestle amongst the fading foliage of the garden form the backdrop, their rich colours and curious shapes telling the story of summer’s challenges and autumn’s generous harvest despite it.

At the heart of this display stands our Lady of the Harvest, dressed in a gown crafted from the graceful leaves and golden treasures of sweetcorn, a dress that is a tribute to the beauty of the gardens and a magnificent crown woven from wheat, with wisps of pampas rising like feathers, giving her the regal spirit of an autumn queen. Beauty that is neither bought or borrowed but simply grown and gathered. Gifts that nature so generously provides are priceless.

The mellow yellows to look forward to in the weeks ahead. The tippy tops of the tress have suddenly turned this week and it is just a matter of time before the golden yellows crawl further down the branches filling the landscape with a buttery charm.

The final hurrah, lasting rather well due to the excellent weather that we are encountering these days. Every additional sunny morning is another glorious surprise. The herbaceous borders in the gardens are looking splendid this week.

As we delve deeper into October the mercury slowly starts to recede, some plants start to prepare for their winter slumber whilst others are just beginning to pick up pace belting out more blooms than the depths of summer. They are not just a pleasure to the eye but an important source of nectar for a range of pollinators before their winter hibernation. These late flowering perennials provide a subtle charm of their own to every border.

A few glimpses of the Kitchen Garden from above. Despite the testing times we have had with the scorching summer this year, the diligent gardeners with their dogged determination and watering routine have managed to keep it all thriving this year.

Doesn't matter if it is October or even November, until the frost hits the breaks, the Salvia do not take their foot off the blooming throttle.

Somehow their vibrance is supressed by the brilliance of the summer sun, their colours are remarkably intense and have a twinkle in each bloom on a dim lit day.

The Abbey Yard border is looking rather inspirational this week. The froth and flounce of the asters is steadily challenged by the zingy reds of the salvia and the vibrant yellows of the heleniums, all together it is quite a vibrant autumn border that really pops out and positively delightful.

The delightful Dahlias and the endless pleasure they bring to our day, they have been in bloom for months now and there is no sign of slowing down anytime soon. The kitchen garden would be incomplete without them.

One really does fall in love with the light in October. It is just low enough to weave through the most intricate delicate foliage and just warm enough to hang on to the summer sarong. The gardens go through a transformation this month, as if the gaffer has reshuffled the spotlights.
