Genevieve Yue presents: Richard Fleischer’s THE NARROW MARGIN + Abbas Kiarostami’s TICKETS Tuesday November 24 @2220arts book signing: 7:30 film: 8:00 On the occasion of the publication of film scholar and critic Genevieve Yue’s new book TRAINS—part of @fordham_press’s Cutaways series, in which writers trace a single device or theme across an idiosyncratic selection of films—we present a short-and-feature pairing curated and introduced by Yue, preceded by a book signing. Post-screening reception brought to you by @lamaterialnews, with open bar for Ciné-Club and L.A. Material members. Copies of Trains will be available for purchase courtesy of @storiesbooksandcafe. Special thanks to Adam Piron, Pauline Kraatz, ellie sunlight moon and Alexandra Jade. THE NARROW MARGIN directed by Richard Fleischer 1952, 71m, U.S., DCP In this taut, white-knuckle thriller from master journeyman Richard Fleischer, an LAPD officer (Charles McGraw) is assigned to protect a witness (Marie Windsor) from gangsters on a cramped, fast-moving train from Chicago to Los Angeles. Shot guerilla-style without permits at Union Station, the film was infamously shelved for two years by Howard Hughes (then the head of RKO Pictures) who wanted to remake it with A-list actors; yet the film is an ideal example of a gritty genre movie with raw, hardboiled chemistry between its then-unknown two leads. “A nearly perfect B picture.” -Jonathan Rosenbaum TICKETS (excerpt, 2005) directed by Abbas Kiarostami 2005, 30m, Italy/Austria, digital Abbas Kiarostami collaborated with Ermanno Olmi and Ken Loach on the little-seen 2005 anthology film TICKETS, with each filmmaker contributing a short film about European passengers on the same train from Innsbruck to Rome. Kiarostami’s deceptively simple segment follows several conversations between strangers across various social and class divisions, including a man who insists that a stranger is calling on his cell-phone without his permission, and two men who insist on being seated in their reserved seats occupied by other passengers. by @fordham_press

𝐍𝐄𝐖 @asian.cha 𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐘 | Will Buckingham reviews Timothy Billings’s 𝑇𝑤𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑦-𝑁𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝐺𝑜𝑜𝑑𝑏𝑦𝑒𝑠: 𝐴𝑛 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑡𝑜 𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑒 𝑃𝑜𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑦 (Fordham University Press, 2025), which reveals the challenges and pleasures of translating Chinese poetry through different versions of Li Bai’s farewell poem. / Somewhere beyond the city walls, two travellers are saying their farewells. They are friends, and once they have said goodbye, they do not know if they will see each other again. This is long before Instagram, WhatsApp, WeChat. It’s the Tang dynasty, after all, and distance means something in a way it doesn’t these days. Once the travellers have said goodbye and headed over the horizon, that may be that. Far off, beyond this scene of parting, there are mountains. They are bluish or greenish, or perhaps of some darker hue. It is surprisingly hard to say. There is a river, too. The river is white, or bright, or somewhat frothy, or else it glimmers. There is something about the sunset as well (perhaps one of the travellers is heading off into it), about tumbleweed, about drifting clouds. And there is a certain amount of waving, for this is, of course, a farewell. The travellers, it seems, are on horseback. Or else they are standing beside some horses. Or beside a single horse. Or, at the very least, horses are somehow involved in the story. Perhaps the horses, however many there may be, have nothing to do with the travellers at all, and have simply wandered into the frame of the poem in search of fresh grass to graze on. At any rate, the last word comes straight from the horse’s mouth: with a final whinny, Li Bai’s celebrated poem “Seeing Off a Friend” draws to a close. / 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗: https://chajournal.com/2026/10/14/li-bai-farewell/ 。。。。。 by @fordham_press
We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Joseph Sciorra, an advisory board member for the Critical Studies in Italian Migrations series and editor of Italian "Folk: Vernacular Culture in Italian-American Lives," published by @fordham_press in 2010. Joseph brought thoughtful attention to the everyday traditions, creativity, and lived experiences of Italian Americans. His work made a lasting contribution to our understanding of Italian American culture and identity. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and colleagues at the John D. You know what’s wild? Blackpentecostal Breath: The Aesthetics of Possibility is ten years old today! How has time flown so quickly?! I cannot lie—I have been absolutely surprised and amazed and deeply humbled by what this book made possible. I felt then the way I felt about the dissertation on which it was based: “I understand what it is I’m trying to say, I hope others will too, but I don’t think anyone will care about Blackpentecostalism in the way I wrote about.” I was astonished the book resonated with others. Astonished, yes, but mostly grateful. Still grateful. This is my first book baby. And though From Infinite World will be published later this year (preorder from your favorite bookstore today!), I gotta pause and celebrate the one that made everything else (and so much more to come on the horizon) able to be thought, written, dreamed, created. Because in this work was art (architectural drawings), fiction (“dear moth…”) and, of course, “otherwise.” Celebrate my book’s ten year anniversary with me? 🎉🙌🏾❤️ by @fordham_press
