“Like St. Ignatius said, go set the world on fire. And that’s what Fordham does best.”

For Veronica Szczygiel, Ph.D., Director of Online Learning at Fordham’s Graduate School of Education, those words capture what it means to lead, and to teach, with purpose.

Through her work, Szczygiel ensures that Fordham’s Jesuit values of cura personalis, reflection, and community extend into every online course. Students don’t just log in for classes; they connect, collaborate, and grow as leaders ready to bring meaningful change to their schools, communities, and beyond.

We’re proud to highlight Xiaying (Summer) Li, a member of Fordham University’s 2022 Innovation in Curriculum and Instruction (ICI) doctoral cohort. Summer earned her PhD in 2026 and is now a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Special Education at Central Connecticut State University.

During her time in the ICI program, Summer developed a strong research focus on integrating augmented and virtual reality into special education, exploring how emerging technologies can address educational challenges. Her research interests continue to shape her work as a faculty member.

Fordham’s ICI program also helped Summer develop as a researcher and scholar through research methods training, publishing, conference presentations, grant writing, and mentorship. These experiences prepared her for the many responsibilities of her current faculty role, including teaching, research, publishing, grant writing, and professional service.
From K–12 educator to researcher and now faculty member, Summer’s journey reflects the impact of research, mentorship, and community at Fordham GSE.

Congratulations, Dr. Li, and best wishes as you begin this exciting next chapter! by @fordhamgse
