#OTD in 1975, Captain Charles T. Miller of the SS Mayaguez personally presented the ship’s wheel to President Ford in the Oval Office. He was accompanied by crew members from the USNS Greenville who had volunteered to join the boarding party that recovered the Mayaguez.The SS Mayaguez, an American merchant ship, had been seized in international waters off the coast of Cambodia on May 12, 1975. Over the following two days President Ford and the National Security Council had closely monitored the situation, ultimately deciding to use air strikes and send in Marines to rescue the boat’s crew. The Mayaguez and its entire crew were safely recovered by May 15.President Ford decided to keep the wheel on display in the Oval Office as a reminder of what he considered to be “a very significant incident that has very broad and, I think, tremendous impact not only on our people but people around the world.”NAID: 12082707 by @fordlibrarymuseum

#OTD in 1975, President Ford spoke on the telephone with the Apollo-Soyuz Crew Members during the Docked Portion of the Apollo-Soyuz Space Flight.THE PRESIDENT: General Stafford, Tom, now that you have had an opportunity to test the new docking system, do you think it will be suitable for future international manned space flight?MR. STAFFORD: Yes, Mr. President, I sure do. Out of the three docking systems I have used, this was the smoothest one so far. It works beautifully.THE PRESIDENT: About three and a half hours ago I sat here in the Oval Office and watched the docking procedure. It looked awfully simple from here. I am sure it was not that simple for the five of you.– Excerpt from President Ford’s phone call to astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton and cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeriy Kubasov during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, 7/17/1975.After three years of planning and cooperative work, the Apollo and Soyuz crews took off for the first joint U.S.-Soviet space flight on July 15, 1975. Two days later the spacecrafts successfully docked, enabling the astronauts and cosmonauts to move between the ships and conduct scientific experiments together. 🥳Happy Birthday, Gerald Ford!🎂 Born on July 14, 1913, the 38th President would be turning 113 today. Some of his staff surprised him with a cake and a chorus of “Happy Birthday” aboard Air Force One on a return trip from Philadelphia the day before his birthday in 1976. Discover "The Beautiful Game" from the pitch to the White House!In honor of the FIFA World Cup, a soccer ball gifted to President Gerald R. Ford by Brazilian soccer legend Pelé is on display at the National Archives Museum. In 1975, the pair famously kicked it around the White House Rose Garden.In 1975, Pelé joined the @nycosmos. When in town for a game against the Washington Diplomats, President Gerald R. Ford welcomed him to the White House. The ball bears the signatures of the 1975 Washington Diplomats players whom Pelé competed against.
