Hi, I’m Jeremy, the fibre artist behind Forest Jem 🌲🧶

After more than 10 years of crocheting and a year and a half of knitting, I’ve fallen in love with another part of the fibre arts: hand dyeing yarn. Inspired by my friend Ryan of Ryan Yarn and guided by Rae at Stix and Stones, I finally took the leap into dyeing and I was instantly hooked.

As a forest ecologist, many of my colourways are inspired by the landscapes, plants, animals, and seasons of Simcoe County and Muskoka. I’m excited to launch my first yarns at the Muskoka Fibre Festival on June 27 and share this journey with the fibre community.

Do you ever wonder what it means when you feel particularly drawn to a certain form of creation? 🤔

I think a lot about the work my ancestors did. For example, my great grandpa Joselino LeFebre, from Ocate, New Mexico, was a sheep herder. In such a small community, surely there were some fibre artists in the family.

Some day I will take a trip there to start learning the weaving tradition of that region 🥰 taken in Orillia, Ontario by @forest.jem

A long weekend in Algonquin Park felt like the appropriate time to cast on a pair of socks in this beautiful @forest.jem Pinecone Sock in "Leafing Out"! I made good progress on both the first sock and some reading, and enjoyed paddling and relaxing with @druid.and.cat.studio and @pandas_thumb! We also brainstormed some fun new ideas to collaborate on for the shop... Knitting summer camp, anyone?

Jeremy's colours are so vibrant - we have several still in stock in-store and online! Back to regular summer hours in our current location at 14 Cataraqui St this week. More to come on our move to 12 Cataraqui soon!

THANK YOU BARRIE!!

We had the BEST time @fibrespirit yesterday- it felt so good to finally be able to be back at this show and hang out with all our fibre friends! The organizing team is out of this world incredible, and every detail is executed meticulously, which made for a fantastic show!

You guys showed up and kept us busy the entire day! Our new yarn bases were gobbled up quickly, and we have lots of dyeing to do to replenish our stock before @kwknittersguild in just two weeks!

Thank you so much to my wonderful friend @forest.jem for spending your Saturday working with me at the booth, and promoting your beautiful hand dyed yarns! And thank you for being so considerate with sharing your tallness with me 🙃

🌲FOREST🌲 ✨GEM✨

@forest.jem a true gem. What a fun couple of days we have had playing in the dye studio, learning new techniques and laughing endlessly! We found new favourite colours and applied them to blank yarns in creative ways to make saturated, nature inspired colours.

I am so proud to have been trusted to be a mentor to Jeremy while they started their yarn dyeing journey, and what a lovely friendship it has grown in to!

You will find @forest.jem yarns at Stix and Stones over the next few weeks, as we will be continuing to collaborate in store & for upcoming fibre festivals! Find their yarns at the Stix booth in Barrie @fibrespirit in a few short weeks, and @kwknittersguild Knitters Fair a few weeks after that!

Stay tuned, as more colours are coming out of the dryer today and will be hitting the floor this morning!!

I have Grotto available on Acorn Sock Weight (80% ecowash merino wool and 20% Nylon). The colour is slightly different but it’s still a vibrant turquoise like this.
