Not quite a castle but the long, creeping shadows clutching at this church gave me strong Beauty and The Beast vibes.

Today was all about water doing what it does best: carving steep canyons, relentlessly wearing huge waterfalls into life, and flooding into new cracks in the earth.

Snorkelling at the fissure between the North American and Eurasian plates was particularly striking (thanks @trollexpeditions) - what an alien landscape you find when ducking below the surface!

Today I pulled into a viewpoint to marvel at the sheer scale of the glacier ahead. And then I noticed the few other vehicles all belonged to emergency responders. Nature is indifferent to our adventures, with today’s tragic news of the holidaying couple caught in the ice cave collapse a stark reminder.

Here are some less whimsical pictures of Iceland’s forbidding side.

Tonight I sat on a cliff in front of a light house and watched the wonders of nature unfurl below me:
1. A hungry Minke (?) whale
2. Volcanic landscapes and the volatile Eyjafjallajokull
3. Puffin family time
4. A lighthouse beloved by nature (and me)
5. Sky fire and black sand beaches as far as the eye can see
6. Shining into the twilight
7. The plume from fresh volcanic activity against a fiery sky
8. Misty isles

Don’t let the fire spewing from the earth fool you - turns out Icelandic summers are like British winters. I made like the locals and dug out my woolly hat and gloves 🧣
