Recently home from a trip in Austria. Bernhard is making beautiful, precise and mineral wines, each year calibrated to find equilibrium.

Carlos and Particia de Lacalle are the brother and sister team taking over the next generation of Artadi and the family wineries. How do they approach the change following the change to leave the DOCa Rioja and produce some off the most iconic wines of the region? They boldly keep pushing!

Carlos is promoting distinction of the villages of Rioja Alavesa, begin by with the mapping of Laguardia, a project in collaboration with other producers in the region. The resulting wines are become more clear, distinct and dare I say delicious. He continues elsewhere in the winery experimenting with larger aging vessels, single vineyard white wines, and the careful feel for the wines from one of the best blind tasters I know.

Bodegas Lustau represents benchmark quality in Jerez de la Frontera with a pedigree of buildings that date back to 1835 and the former home to the storied Domecq winery. Their careful respect of the Andalusian culture, architecture and tradition, blended with the modern analysis and study of flor, biological factors and how to move a winery over 5 years while maintaining living wines is a testament to their dedication.

Walking through Los Arcos, Las Cruces and La Sacristia gave us deeper knowing and understanding of the wines. We made comparative tastings of 3 finos from El Triangulo which 100% confirm the distinct sense of place when the nature of the wine is the same base wine for each, yet their nurture in different bodega and towns yield very distinctly different fino sherries. We learned the value of airflow, alley ways to direct cool air, greenery planting to mitigate sunlight, and the special sense of place that creates these long lived wines.

Amazing visit to Bodegas Barbadillo, benchmark quality producer of Manzanilla in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Humbling to walk through cathedral cellars, taste from the Solear criadera, and learn the history from 1821 until today.

Change is welcome at this historic bodegas. Manuel Barbadillo studied and bottled individual pagos going back to the early 1930’s. In 1999, they were the first to release the Manzanilla En Rama series pulling seasonal sacas of unfiltered wine, creating a new and now benchmark quality in the region that just celebrated 100 releases. We tasted from an organic solera started in 2019, which will be released this summer as Salicornia, the only 100% organic Manzanilla on the market, coming from the Balbaína and Burujena pagos.
