Everyone has a role to play in restoring nature, says @timjarvisam founder of @forktreeproject… 👩‍🌾👨‍🍳👩‍🎤👨🏻‍🏫👧🏻🧑🏾‍🦱🌻

Tim is a remarkable Antarctic explorer, environmental scientist, filmmaker, and founder of Forktree in Australia who has been recognised globally for his leadership in rewilding and nature restoration.

And Forktree just joined the alliance! 🥹🎊

Forktree is showing what is possible in terms of habitat restoration, regenerative agriculture and improved land and water management.

Their ultimate goal is to restore nature; both habitats and native wildlife all the while including local knowledge and consideration of climate change.

Forktree Project inspires us all to see what is missing, and do our best to bring it back!

Plant of the Month: River Mint (Mentha australis) 🌿

Fresh, fragrant and full of surprises! Our October plant of the month is River Mint, a creeping native plant that grows along rivers and creek edges, bringing a wonderfully strong minty scent to its surroundings. In our latest blog, we explore five things to love about this fascinating plant, from its traditional uses and refreshing aroma to its importance for local biodiversity. Did you know River Mint is listed as Vulnerable on the Fleurieu Peninsula?

At The Forktree Project, we grow thousands of native mint plants each year for ecological restoration across the Fleurieu Peninsula and beyond, helping bring threatened species back into our landscapes. Heard enough to want more?

Read the full blog post, written by our Nursery Manager Fleur, via the link in our bio to discover more about this fascinating native plant! It’s also nursery season! Come and join us as we grow a huge variety of endemic plants ready to go into the world next winter, including many threatened species. Email us at mailto:hello@theforktreeproject.com to express your interest in volunteering in the Forktree Nursery.
We’d love to see you here. 🌱

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🌱

Today, we’re saying a big thank you to the wonderful teachers and schools who bring their students to The Forktree Project to take part in our environmental education program. We love welcoming you to our site!

We’re grateful to the educators who go beyond the classroom to give students opportunities to connect with nature and learn about the importance of protecting and restoring our natural landscapes. By supporting your students to learn through hands-on experiences, you help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards and give young people a deeper understanding of the natural world around them.

Thank you to all teachers for the important work you do 💚

Meet James, our Nursery Project Officer 🌱

James studied Marine Biology and Ocean Science before completing a Master’s in Aquatic Resource Management. He spent more than a decade working in the water industry, firstly predicting future water demand before moving into the communications and marketing team, with communication roles then taking him into the agriculture and charity sectors in the years that followed. But his heart has always been with the natural environment — and increasingly with native plant restoration and rewilding.

At The Forktree Project, growing some of South Australia’s rarer native plants is the absolute highlight for James. Getting the opportunity to then help put those plants back into the landscape, whether at The Forktree Project or on other restoration sites, makes it even more rewarding. And, of course, being part of a friendly, supportive and genuinely passionate team is a pretty big part of what makes working at The Forktree Project special for James.

His favourite native plant is the Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis subsp. viminalis). With one growing in view of his back garden, James describes them as “beautiful, characterful and unmistakably Australian”.

Outside of work, walking is James’s calm time, with the Adelaide Botanic Garden and the Linear Park trail towards the ocean among his most frequent places to head. And when it comes to sport, rugby union and Test cricket are the essentials.

National Water Week: Water connects everything 💧

This National Water Week, we’ve reflected on the importance of water and the role it plays in everything we do at The Forktree Project.

Here on the Fleurieu Peninsula, water is a precious resource that we need to manage, capture and use wisely. Our site isn’t connected to mains water, so we’re in the process of upgrading our tank system to make better use of the rainfall captured by our dams during winter and help reduce water loss through evaporation.

Using solar-powered pumps, we’re transferring water from our dams into new storage tanks, helping us retain this valuable resource for use throughout the year. The final tank in this upgrade is being installed next week, marking another step towards improving how we capture and store water on site.

Water is essential to our work restoring native habitats, growing native plants in our nursery and creating healthier landscapes for wildlife. By making the most of the rainfall we receive, we can better support these activities and ensure water is available when it’s needed most.

This year’s National Water Week theme, Water Connects Everything, is a reminder that every drop counts. By investing in practical solutions and using water mindfully, we can support our restoration work and help create more resilient landscapes for the future. 🌿💧

What a gift to finish a day of Inspired Leadership at @forktreeproject , taking a moment to soak in the beauty of this incredible place.

A day of place-based leadership learning, exploring what it means to care for our wellbeing, inside and out.

We had the pleasure of facilitating @bewellco_ while Tim and Liz Jarvis shared the inspiring work of The Forktree Project, restoring the land, regenerating native habitat and caring for our natural environment.

A beautiful reminder that the wellbeing of people and planet are deeply connected. 💚

Meet Liz, co-founder of The Forktree Project and head of our education program 🌱

Liz’s career has taken her from book publishing to high-school teaching and pastoral care, and eventually to experiential environmental education. With qualifications spanning the arts, education and wellbeing, she brings a strong interest in the connection between people, learning and the natural environment.

Her favourite native plant is Hardenbergia violacea, and it’s easy to see why. Liz loves the way these climbing natives weave over rocks, logs and the branches of prickly shrubs, creating shelter for woodland birds and providing food for pollinators when other food sources are scarce. And, of course, their stunning purple flowers are a bonus!

For Liz, one of the most rewarding parts of working at The Forktree Project is knowing that the work has the potential to make a genuinely positive difference to both the environment and people. Seeing the landscape change and native fauna return is incredibly rewarding, as is giving young people the opportunity to make a difference and feel good about it.
She also loves that she’s continuing to learn every day through her work — something she describes as a real privilege.

Outside of work, Liz enjoys travelling, from exploring the Australian Outback to discovering different cultures and landscapes around the world. Camping, hiking, theatre and spending time with family and friends are also among her favourite pastimes.

Have you spotted any Caper White butterflies (Belenois java) fluttering about lately? 🦋This photo was taken at The Forktree Project over the weekend!

These butterflies undertake seasonal migrations south from breeding areas in the Northern Flinders Ranges, inland New South Wales and Queensland.
Historically, butterfly migrations across South Australia occurred in huge numbers, with Caper Whites travelling alongside other species such as Painted Ladies (Vanessa kershawi), Meadow Argus (Junonia villida), Australian Admirals (Vanessa itea), Lesser Wanderers (Danaus petilia) and Chequered Swallowtails (Papilio demoleus).

Today, many of these migrations go almost unnoticed, with fewer butterflies taking part due to the loss of breeding habitat. For Caper Whites, this is linked to the decline of their only naturally occurring larval host plant in South Australia, the Tree Caper. Growing sparsely in rocky ravines of the Northern Flinders Ranges, the plant appears to be struggling to regenerate due to the effects of droughts and grazing by animals.

The story of the Caper White is a reminder of how interconnected our landscapes are, and how our work restoring native habitats across the Fleurieu Peninsula can help create places where wildlife can feed, shelter and thrive. 🌿

Just like a patchwork quilt, only it’s alive 🌱

We love the transition into nursery season - tray upon tray of seeds sown and ready to burst above the soil (or perlite) into the world and begin their journey towards seedling-hood 💚

Meet Ollie, our Environmental Project Officer 🌱

Ollie has a Bachelor of Environmental Science from Flinders University and a strong interest in ecological restoration, land management and hydrology.

His work at The Forktree Project takes him across all sorts of areas including land & site management, ecological restoration, infrastructure design & build, and nursery & seed orchard operations.
His favourite native plant is the iconic Sturt’s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa), which he loves for its striking flowers and resilience in some of Australia’s most rugged landscapes.

Outside of work, Ollie is happiest outdoors, whether that’s camping, hiking, mountain biking, four-wheel driving or exploring some of Australia’s more remote landscapes.

For Ollie, one of the best parts of working at The Forktree Project is the variety of the work and seeing the tangible results — knowing that the work happening now will help restore habitat and landscapes for years to come.
