Good morning ghouls and goblins!! I can’t believe we’re almost halfway through October 🫣

It snowed this weekend, so I felt completely justified in doing absolutely nothing. I did pop into town to pick up these two books, and finally got to start What Feeds Below!!

What are you currently reading??

As you know, I have an obscene physical TBR, and while I like to read a variety all year, I definitely hold some of my books for fall and spooky season for the vibes.

These are my top contenders for spooky season books that I already own and desperately need to read!

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

Opal is in her mid-twenties, living in a motel room with her teenage brother, and working at Tractor Supply. Her outlook on life is grim and her only driving force is to get her brother out of Eden, Kentucky, a town bogged down by mist, chemical pollution, and racism.

The Starling House is a mysterious residence with more lore than any house should have. From demonic possession to wolves prowling the property, the people of Eden fear and tell tales of the haunted old manor and its mysterious residents. Opal has been drawn to the house since childhood, with vivid dreams about hallways and rooms she shouldn’t be able to picture.

This book fit perfectly for the beginning of October and while it wasn’t scary, there was plenty of intrigue and spooky mystery as we learn more about the house and how it’s woven into the horrible history of the town.

I loved the relationships between all of the characters and how they transformed or were shared in a different light as Opal opens up and experiences her own growth. This was a fun, spooky mystery with a very heartwarming lesson on loneliness and the price of battling life alone.

One of these things is not like the other!

The last week has been a whirlwind with a wedding back-to-back with a week long conference for work.

I can’t believe we’re already 10 days into October 👀 I had to come home and immediately decorate because I cannot miss another second of spooky season!!!

In book news, I finished Starling House (love) and started Diavola (like so far).

Happy Monday!

I’m on a bit of an extended vacay/business trip week, and I fear I haven’t had a vegetable in 4 days.

We flew to Charlotte for a family wedding, and I devoured Starling House on the plane. The humidity has my hair looking great but I am not made to be sweaty cold.

In other news, today starts a week long conference in DC, so plz share any recommendations!!

Happy October witches! 🧙‍♀️

Every new season is automatically my favorite, but there’s just something especially exciting about fall!

If you love the season of the witch, check out some books on my TBR and some I recommend for a bit of magic!

September both flew by and feels like it started forever ago.

I didn’t realize until this post how little I read in September, but I’ve been booked and busy with travel, backpacking, and a couple of staycations. The second the temps cool off, I become a kitchen fiend, and all my spare time is spent cooking or baking cozy fall foods.

My books this month were all bangers though, and after so many DNFs last month this felt like a good make up!

Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison

Darcy is a grim reaper who wishes for something more than death. Determined to skirt the rules and save her next assignment, she pairs up with a bajillion year old guardian angel whose hero complex forces him to see her only as the villain in his story.

This was fun and cute and a perfect dose of fall for September. I did start off as a Gabriel hater, but eventually came around. I also loved the conversation around death and the lessons that Darcy learns about her role as a reaper.

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mysterious disappearances and deaths, strange occurrences, and the unexplainable feeling of being stalked connect three women throughout different timelines.

In 1908 Hidalgo, Mexico, Alba lives on her family’s rural farm, grieving the recent loss of her father. Her younger brother wants to continue managing the farm while her uncle, who is visiting from the city, has other plans. Their petty arguments and opposing opinions become insignificant as their land becomes treacherous, the family feels cursed, and Alba fears they have been bewitched.

In 1934 Massachusetts, Beatrice Tremblay is a student at Stoneridge College writing about the events leading up to and following her friend’s mysterious disappearance. The story ends up as a manuscript and eventually becomes the inspiration for a horror novel that she publishes, despite never knowing what happened to her friend.

In 1998 Massachusetts, Minerva Contreras is Alba’s great granddaughter and an international graduate student at Stoneridge College researching Beatrice Tremblay for her thesis. Nana Alba’s eerie folktales of witches in rural Mexico are the inspiration for Minerva’s interest in horror stories, leading her to study in the same place as the focus of her thesis. As she continues to dive into her research, she can’t help but notice an eerie similarity between the bedtime stories of her youth, Beatrice’s recollection of her friend’s disappearance, and Minerva’s own suspicion that she is being watched.

I looooved this book. The story was so atmospheric and gave me the heebie jeebies to the point where I had to stop reading it right before bedtime or I’d stay awake listening for every little sound. I loved the folklore woven in, and the connections between all of the characters and timelines. The endings of each story were a little predictable, but I still waited in anticipation to find out exactly how things would end up.

My friends and I backpacked over 30 miles the past three days and it was the perfect introduction to fall!

The weight of your pack is so important and every ounce counts, but you know I had to bring my kindle. We got hit with a hail storm one night, so big shoutout to Grim Tidings for distracting me.

If you know a remedy for blisters, let me know

I’m very much a mood reader in genre as well as literally having to be in the right mood to read, and this week has been the perfect setting. Storms, chilly evenings, and no plans!

Have you read any of these books?

The Bewitching follows three women throughout time whose stories are interconnected by witchcraft, mysterious disappearances, and death.

The feeling of being watched, strange animal deaths, wilting flowers, and bizarre symbols haunt this multi-generational story.

In this recent release, a grim reaper asks for her next assignment to be something more. What she gets is a territorial guardian angel acting like a psycho because she’s been assigned a soul in his town.

Imagine one half of your favorite podcasting duo goes missing, and their deeply held secrets start to surface. As Benny fights to find his best friend and cohost, things intensify as secrets are revealed and suspicion turns on him.

I love a rom com for the predictability, fun, and the quippy dialogue, and Abby Jimenez always delivers.

This follows Samantha and Xavier and their whirlwind romance that’s doomed from the start. This is the epitome of right person wrong time. taken in BOOKSTA by @fortheplotbookstagram

A new book & a sweet treat ☕️

Happy Sunday, I hope you’ve all had a relaxing weekend. I went to see Practical Magic 2, and now I’m in a witchy mood. Made some pumpkin loaf and settled in with The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I still haven’t read Mexican Gotchic (🫣) but so far I’m loving this book.

Do you have a favorite witch book?
