On this day exactly five years ago, I met someone in a head-to-toe baby blue outfit which matched my eyes and the clear São Paulo sky on that winter day. It felt like my world was in slow motion. She was holding a picnic basket filled with fruit, fresh juice and the best selection of sweets from the local padaria. That day, that moment, that girl… changed my life. “Forma’s origins trace back to 1949, with the arrival of Italian architect and artist Carlo Hauner in Brazil. Hauner acquired the assets and machinery of the Pau Brasil workshop—an early initiative by Lina Bo Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti—and transformed it, in 1950, into Móveis Artesanal.

Based in Itaim Bibi, Artesanal functioned as a transitional laboratory. Under Hauner’s influence, and later that of Austrian architect Martin Eisler, the company began moving away from one-off carpentry toward a rationalist approach suited to São Paulo’s rapid vertical growth. It was within this environment that figures like Sérgio Rodrigues began their careers, negotiating between European technical rigor and the search for a Brazilian identity... ” Read more at @bossafurniture

A primary design feature in both projects are the support pilotis. They are a direct attempt to synthesize Le Corbusier’s modernist principles with Brazilian colonial traditions. Pilotis are structural columns that lift a building above the ground, creating open space underneath and a sense of lightness.

Costa’s pilotis made of local eucalyptus mimic the organic spread of trees to integrate the hotel into its forested setting, while Niemeyer’s concrete supports provide a rhythmic, geometric skeleton for his monumental urban design.

In 1952, architects Walter Machado and Jefferson Lodi, graduates of the architecture school at UFMG, designed this residence in Belo Horizonte, Brazil for the couple Milton and Gilda Mourão, a doctor and fine artist. The residence was inspired by the modern Pampulha complex designed by Oscar Niemeyer and was constructed on the plot of land adjacent to the family’s eclectic mansion.

✨ BURBERRY GODDESS ✨

Back in 2023, we drove a few hours from São Paulo to Morro Pedra Grande to shoot for Burberry. We reached a point where the car couldn’t continue up the trail due to heavy rains the previous week. So the final part of the trail, we had to carry all of our gear up to the summit. As we rounded the last turn and could begin to see the horizon line, we were greeted with the strongest wind I’ve felt since living through East Coast hurricanes back in the US. Everything that we had planned pre-pro for the shoot had to shift direction on the fly. We embraced this obstacle, simplified and made the power of Mother Nature the focus of the film. Shooting at high frame rate gave the gusts of wind a surreal feeling. Nature truly reminds us to be spontaneous.

A few photographs I shot while on a visit in Belo Horizonte, Brazil back in 2023. I was reminded of this work this morning when I was going through my library and came across an old MO’DULO (publication started by Niemeyer) Issue 42 from 1976 that featured this project. Niemeyer was directly inspired by the mountain range surrounding the city and translated them into the church’s iconic curved roof in reinforced concrete. This form was a controversial design choice that went against the traditional church structures of that time (and even until today).
